Anyone have a propane range at their camp?

I picked up a used propane oven/range on kijiji for our camp and I rigged it for 20lb propane tanks, it works great! It will be a huge step up from the tiny Coleman camp stove we've been using for the last 5 years...

My question is, does anyone have a rough idea how quick I will burn through 20lbs of propane during regular cooking for 6 guys? I know cooking habits will vary, but any estimate would help.

Got it at home? Try cooking on it and see how fast you go through the juice.

Cooking for six guys? Not a gret reference, as it does not tell us whether you are boiling just one pot to make soup, or if you have a french chef as a camp slut, that wants to be reducing stock while the roast cooks in the oven. :D

Got any BTU or other 'heat' markings on the unit? You should be able o pretty closely figure out how much gas it will burn all lit up, and calculate from there.

Cheers

I have a 100# tank at home that is hooked up to my stove. It gets filled twice yearly.

We run a propane stove at our camp but use a 100# tank. I would guess that we use less than 20# in 2 weeks of hunting with the pilot lights and actual cooking.

We tend to go through a 20lb tank in about 2 weeks, with a bar fridge, 2 lights and the range. We don't have an oven though. usually 4 guys.

I picked up an almost new stove/oven from an RV. welded a stand for it and will be using it this fall. Expecting 20lbs to last a week.

If you can get the range there, you can get a 100 lb. cylinder there. :D Last you for your stay.

We run two propane fridges plus a full size propane stove with oven that gets used everyday. We have cook, and thats all he does is fuss in the kitchen and cook for the 10 of us.

A close estimate is we would go through at least a 20 Ib of propane in 5 days. When I go to the far north moose hunting with the slide in camper for two weeks I take 4 -20 Ib tanks to run a fridge, stove and furnace. In cold weather the furnace can chew through alot of propane.

Put it this way best be taking some home as opposed to running out and wishing you had brought more.

we go through 20 lbs in two weeks
remember if the tanks are outside they will sweat and frost when its very cold
this results in lower heat and less usage of propane
again i go out oct -dec in a tent

You guys seem to be using a lot more propane than we do
Our stove is a 24" apartment size
We were at the cabin from Aug 1 to the 17th with pilot on 24/7 and used over half a 20lb tank

Here is some math.
1 gallon of propane generates 91600 btu's.
A 20 lb tank holds 4.73 gallons

Theoretically, the tank holds 433000 btu's but they usually only fill them 80%.

A medium sized BBQ rated for 40,000 btu's would last about 8 hours on high.

As suggested, check for the BTU rating of the gas range and do a quick calculation to get an idea.....and then take an extra tank!

Good luck.

In my camp we have a 24" stove with an oven.

Our gang runs between 9 and 11 guys, and the stove is used for 3 meals a day.

We also use the oven several times during the week (turkey, venison roast, cake), and sometimes we do pre-preparation of meals the night before (soups, chili, etc.).

A 20 lb tank lasts from saturday noon to sometime on thursday. We always have a second 20 pounder with us.
