I'm looking at acquiring one primarily as a base for a build. Am I correct in believing that "A 700 action is a 700 action" in terms of replacement barrels, triggers, stocks, etc?
There are Lots of well written reviews floating around the internet that dont really favour the vtr barrel. The Majority of reviews basically talk about how the triangular barrel isnt all what it was cut out to be. I was going to Buy a vtr two years back but 90% of the reviews I read said the heavy barrel was more accurate than the triangle barrel, and recoil was just about the same despite its built in "break". I mean I've never shot the vtr but from most reviews the comparison between a normal 700 heavy barrel and the vtr seemed to be .2-.4moa at 100 yards difference and thats is quite a lot if youre looking for a precision rifle. There are lots of 6.5 and .308 700 barreled actions floating around for pretty good prices these days. just my 2 cents.
? you talking about Remington 700 actions? not 100% sure on this but all the aftermarket parts I bought for my rem 700 in 308 had an option for long (30-06 size) and short (.308 size).
Yes there are short action 700's and long action 700's that have different overall lengths and action screw spacing. There are also factory detachable magazine action and standard action eith integral feed ramps. Then the different bolt face sizes for the 3 main different case head sizes but might be a few other variations I'm forgetting.
One could generalize and say that most any factory barrel is a roll of the dice.
There are all sorts of minor detail variations in M700 actions, calibers, magazine systems, triggers, finish have all varied over the years.
