Anyone have personal experience with M.D. Charlton's work on S&W wheelguns?

I've just picked up a nice 629 and want to have some work done on it - hammer narrowed; and trigger narrowed and polished;maybe the action slicked-up.

Anyone have anything to say about M.D. Charlton's custom work?

Any other S&W wheelgun smiths I should consider?

Thanks.

From my understanding they are a S&W warranty site so must know the workings of S&W firearms.

I have dealt with them before just not with gunsmithing.

You are correct, Steve David.

Murray was the biggest name in PPC for a long time, and is probably the most experienced person you could bring your gun to.

i bought a used smith 586 from a fellow gun club member in saskatoon. he informed me, and he is very reliable, that the action work was done by md.carlson.

the 586 in 6 inch barrel had a patridge front sight blade but otherwise left stock for use in ppc

the action and timing was excellent and well done. this was before md.carlton moved to bc and started his enterprise there.

MD Charlton

I had Murray put a tune on my 6" S&W Model 57 .41 Mag a few years back. Very slick action now. We are spoiled on Vancouver Island with MD Charlton right in our back yard. His local shop is literally a 5 minute drive from my house. I recently acquired a 6" S&W 586 .357 Mag that also has a Charlton 'tune' on it. Another very slick one.

This past weekend I also had the pleasure of handling a Pietta SAA, 5.5" nickel with the faux ivory grips, that has a Charlton 'tune' on it. He can work wonders with a SAA, too.

Yeah, the work is worth it.....

My .02..................

They worked on two for me last year. One needed a new sight and the other was mis-firing. Both were back in my hands before I would have believed it possible (well within two weeks, including all shipping). The work was very satisfactory - not perfect, but very satisfactory - and they had been test-fired (casings and targets were enclosed) and then they had been cleaned. Parts and labour costs were itemized and reasonable.

I was very impressed and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I've dealt with them last year, timing problem and bent ejector rod on a Smith 27, excellent job, professionnal people.

Will not hesitate to send them a S&W for repair again.
Too bad he doesn't work on Colt.

I have a Charlton Tuned 686. I'm really happy with it.

I had the action smoothed and lightened. The SA is ~2.5 lbs now. He also installed a new patridge sight and bead blasted the whole gun. It's pretty sweet.

I had the chance to hold an Austin Behlert chopped model 29 (round butt, 3" barrel and full action tune) in one hand and a Charlton prepped K frame in the other, about 20 years ago. There wasn't a nickel between them, as far as trigger pull (both DA and SA) timing and lock up went, they were both incredible, and if you didn't know different you'd bet they were done by the same 'smith.

Murray Charlton has done work on virtually every S&W revolver I've owned over the past 20 years - and there have been a he#% of a lot of wheel guns in my safe over the years. His work is excellent. His trigger jobs for 'Distinguished Revolver' are amazing. If you're interested in building a PPC gun or smoothing out a crinkly trigger on your weekend plinker - he 'da man.

Wow! This thread is an eye-opener for me. Cuz here in Toronto, "MD Charlton" is just basically known as a Police supply store, kinda like R. Nichols, except with good customer service and realistic store hours. Not known at all as any kind of firearm place (Apart from agency purchases).
