I was just wondering if anyone has experiences with the Barnes bullets in .35 cal and how they perform for expansion at various speeds, close range and longer range on animals from deer to moose. I'm concerned that they may not open up at high speed at close range on rib shots or at longer ranges. What have you guys found with these bullets for .35 cal?

I always wonder why folks insist in using any other bullet than the Speer 250 SP in any 35cal

They are accurate, less expensive that the premiums and have a very good reputation on big game.

I use 250gr Hornady SP in my 35 Whelen @2600+ fps and 225gr Sierra BT in my 358 Win @ 2550 fps.
They have accounted for 25 Moose, 3 Elk and some Deer at ranges from 50yds to 400 yds.
The bullet never failed to kill the animal on the first shot.
The Barnes bullets cost way too much for me and I don't see how they could make the animal any deader!
Good Luck
John

I have shot a lot of moose with my 358 Norma over the last thiry years. The 250 grain speer hot core works as good as any other bullet I have tried.I have used Bitter Roots ,Kodiaks, Speer Grand Slam,Barnes originals,Nozler Partions,Remington core loc,Hawk.all 250 grainers.Very seldom I do not recover my bullet, the speers end up weighing between 150 and 170 grains depending on the range.I have used Hornady 250 grain but fine with the extra velocity from the norma they blow up.In a whelen they mabey work alright.

Bullets travelling at high speed are more likely to open up than not expand properly.

I hardly ever recover one of my Hornady bullets. They usually zip on thru on one of my typical chest shots. Perhaps nick a rib on the way thru.
No meat there to ruin and big target too....easier for me to hit!
I have a bag of 6 or 700 250gr Speer Hot Cor bullets that i want to work up a load for sometime.
So much to do and so little time!

River Rat,
I heard that the Moose in the Yukon are huge compared to ours in West Central Alberta.
How big are they?
I took a large(for here) moose cow 3 weeks ago and i estimate it weighed about 950+ lbs live weight.

Good Luck

When I was there in 98, I saw one in the back of a trailer that measured 78", and a couple other "average" bulls in the 50"-60" range.

Where else in Canada, other than Whitehorse, can you buy 375H&H in Canadian Tire?

Years ago I tried the 250 gr Barnes X in my Whelen. When I was getting .75"=1.5" groups with Hornadys and Noslers, the best i could do with the Barnes was 2.5-4".

Also, because of the length of the Barnes, I was forced to seat them fairly deep in the case and with the load of RL15 I wanted to use powder compression was too much.

I stick with the 250 Hordandy RNSP's in the .35 Whelen, loaded "full tilt" for moose - no disappointments so far. For deer I load the Speer 220 FP's down to about 2200 - ( sort of like a hot .35 Rem) no disappoinments there so far either !!!!

Here are a few I've recovered (all still weigh 225gr).

Left to right:

1. Whitetail Buck 27" Penetration (broke rear hip and travelled down spine) on a Texas Heart Shot @ 150yds.

2. Black bear, double lung shot and exit (found bullet in the bank behind the bear).

3. Block of wood (Test)

They expanded well, and internal damage was considerable. I took another good blackie at close range... bullet might still be going for all I know!
