Anyone here a current or past member of Peterborough Revolver and Pistol Club (PRPC)?

My RPAL was issued yesterday and I am now researching a range/club to join. At this time, I am mainly going to shoot handguns as storage could be an issue for me (not the security aspect but available space).

Location wise, Target Sport (Gormley) is ideal for me as I am only about a 10 minute drive from there. It seems fine for walk-in's but comments from members (past and present) are less than stellar. Aurora GC would be my next choice but it is currently not accepting new members just like most GTA ranges. Then I found PRPC who is accepting new member - it's about 1.5 hour drive for me but there are back roads I can take to avoid the 401 traffic.

If you are a current (or past) member, what's your opinion for this club? They seem to have graduating system where you start with rim fire and need to pass an assessment before you can shoot center fire - which I do not have a problem with.

Any other clubs/ranges I should be looking at?

Thanks in advanced for your input.

(I am posting in this sub-forum since I am looking at shooting handguns only at least for the next 12 to 24 months)

Yes I am, it's a bit of pain to join because all done by volunteers and nobody usually ever in the office. I suggest email and be patient. There is a 8 week "training" with RO which are on Wednesday nights 7pm to 9pm. It's up to you how fast your do it if you can attend every Wednesday consecutively or here and there. Every time you go the Ro signs off on your club rule book. You do your training with a 22 pistol that RO provide if you don't have your own, must bring your own ammo, eye and ear protection. Their is a written test at some point. A safety course usually on a saturday or sunday where they walk you through, show you everything in club house, range and I can't remember now if there is 5 or 6 outside ranges for rifles, shotguns, Bow range and even a outside shoot anything range including handguns. The range is on a 100 acre property, opens 9am to 9pm and Sundays 12pm just because to respect neighbours even though its basically all farm land around it. Google map it.

The beauty of the range is pretty much deserted during the day, you drive in, put up the "range is Open" sign, turn on the lights, sign in, fire up the heat, follow range proceedures and start shooting. During the summer if your are using outside ranges put up the red flag on the pole and have a great day. The 10 lane indoor range is virtually empty daily, if your lucky you will run into another member or two. There is security surveillance everywhere, swipe your card and have a great day of shooting. Only 22 rifles allowed in the indoor range but pretty much every hand gun is a go. After your are down clean the range after your done, if nobody else has arrived, shut it all down, sign out.

During the day it's pointless to go there, nobody there from office, but best bet is drive up there any wednesday night and talk with RO. Pretty much every evening there is something going on like cowboy shooting, its on their website. During the summer there is all kinds of events shooting events and OPP/local law enforcement use outside a range for training in the summer but rarely see them. It's a good shooting club and small membership.

I lived in Toronto pretty much my whole life except last few years, #401 to the #115 is your fastest way here. Depending where you live can tell your other ways to get here. Also Easthill Outdoors (google them) has a fantastic 30 yard indoor range built maybe 3 years ago which is just north of #401 on the #115 but they sell range packages only, your rent their guns and shoot in their range. Not sure if they changed that you can check.

Easthill Outdoors in Orono, Gagnon Sports in Oshawa or Firearms Outlet Canada in Ajax (coming soon) are your best bets for indoor ranges. For outdoor ranges I'm not sure if any are accepting members or have to go on a waitlist

Easthill is accepting members, they have a 24/7 range.

That is excellent, in the beginning you could only buy their shooting packages. Will have to check it out because their range is beautiful. Firearms outlet is another nice place, nice to have gunshop and range together. It's taken awhile for the range to open. Politics no doubt.

Thank you so much for your insight - this type of the information and first hand experience is exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

Thank you for the suggestion - Easthill looks beautiful and modern based on the pictures posted online. However, its price structure is similar to Target Sport and full time membership is more than double compared to PRPC. Due to the distance, I probably won't be able to take advantage of the associate level membership.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

Last I checked Burlington Rifle and Revolver club was accepting new members. It’s a long wait list but you can possibly join via walk on during their orientation days.

Easthill is very nice, bought a few guns from them and very easy to drive too. I bit more money but it really is top notch and there is always staff there in case you run into any problems. There is a side door to range if you don't want to go through store. Damn now I may have to join to shoot some rifles indoors over the winter!!

sounds like you're near the GTA so you could also check out Sharon Gun Club. you could go by on a saturday morning to chat with someone in the office or even with one of the directors hanging out in the clubhouse.

Prpc

I wasn't aware they had outdoor shotgun and rifle setups. Also didn't realize their property was 100 acres. Just curious.
