Well guys, I've never been hunting before, mainly because I don't care for game meat. But, I've decided that I would like to give it a go. I have rifles that would be perfect for coyote hunting, and I figure that is a good place to start to see if I like it / can pull the trigger with an animal in the cross hairs.

So, I have a few questions...

1) What do I need license wise to go hunting for coyote?

2) Are there any seasons for coyote or is it just open?

3) I live just outside Halifax, toward the valley. Does anyone hunt coyotes in this area that would be willing to take a rookie along for a trip or two?

4) What do you do with a coyote after the hunt?

5) What don't I know that I'm not asking??

hunter safety course and Wildlife habitat stamp

yes and no there are different guns allowed in different seasons

Give to local trapper friend

Hmm that's a tough one

You are allowed centerfire rifle till the end of March then shotgun after that.

I am Just outside of Halifax, towards the valley as well and have hunted this area for coyotes fairly regularly, without success I might add. There isn't a big population around here as it is woodland and they make damned sure to use the woods to their advantage. Still I try to bait, call and hunt them when I can. I would be happy to take you out for a couple hunts.

Somewhere with livestock farms and open fields are the key to success IMO.

Awesome, sounds good to me. I don't have my hunter safety card yet, I'll be starting that process tomorrow. I'll let you know as soon as I get everything in place.

Thanks!!

I've been keen to give it a shot myself now that deer is over and done with. I overheard a couple of guys talking about Windsor Forks at Hnatiuk's but I don't know anyone out there... I've got a buddy who's parents own a farm in Brooklyn but no sign on their property after 3 years there.

I think Cranky hit the nail on the head with the comment on open fields near livestock farms, especially near a poultry farm that chucks their dead birds out for the hawks/eagles. I've had heaps of success just walking up to people's front door and asking if I could hunt their land while out in Canning after pheasant; a sweet area for pheasant btw. If I find a good spot over the next few months then I'll let you know and we can head out. What're you shooting with btw? Just curious. I'm using a heavy-barreled Stevens 200 in .223 with 62gr V-max handloads.
