Anyone hunt the Gulf Islands?

Lots of private land, and lots of folks who are not the hunting type. You will require a special license too.

Yeah unfortunately lots of private land. I know someone that says he hunts there on private land under the crop protection act. I was just wondering if someone knew the details of how that worked.

I try. I don't know if I'd call it hunting so much as flailing around in the bush hoping to stumble across a suicidal mythical immature bull.

I went up there last season, no draw but didn't see much other than a lot of hunters and a cow and a calf.

Do you know anyone that has come out with an immature or calf from around there?

...and Vancouver is lefty hipster, credit living central. But both have their up sides, and the Gulf Islands are far, far ahead of Vancouver chief. ;)

LOL...you've never lived on a Gulf Island. There are better options for small blacktails than the Gulf Islands. Texada for example. You need to get off the beaten track though. Quadra can be ok too.

Not this past year.

I had permission for a big chunk of private land on Saltspring a few years ago. Lots of landowners don't like their gardens being destroyed by deer. I found my contact through an ad on usedvictoria.com (HIS ad). I wish I could pass on the info/contact details but they are lost in the ether.

I never ended up hunting there but I've been led to believe the deer are plentiful though small. You risk the ire of the "locals," of course, despite the legality, so some discretion in your activities may be advised, i.e. no camo gear, gun racks, or cleaned game strapped to the hood of the old Subaru. Many locals are totally ignorant of the laws and will persecute you as if you're poaching Jesus Christ himself. Or so I've been told. The landowner had given me permission to even camp on his land during the hunt.

You get both extremes of people on the Gulf Islands. The Anti-everything are fairly new, wealthy escapees from the GVRD asylum, most old timers are at least OK with hunting.
I have taken a few bucks 120lbs plus including one that went 147. Not bad for "tiny" Gulf Island Black Tails.;) They're there.

Which Gulf Island do you wish to hunt on?
Each island is its own community and thus there are variations on where and when one may hunt.
Check the Gulf Islands Regs in the BC Hunting Regulations for the basic info.
Some are locked up tighter than a drum (Sydney Island, Mayne Island for two examples)
Discretion is also the word of the day when Hunting those lil honey holes.

Oddly enough I have, Saltspring, spent several years there cumulatively, we had a place in Long Harbour. Plenty of years sailing the islands as well, and still do! Saw some beautiful little bucks sailing up the outside of Vancouver Island into the Broken Islands group a few years ago. Wish I could have hunted at the time.

Well then you are a bigger Hippy than I imagined! :)

There is no doubt that they are beautiful though, especially if you are a fan of boating.

Lotta good normal folks there too, if you count pilots as normal, popular place for those of us on long shift work that fly out to work. My wife says it's too quiet though, so we stay up north, fine with me. :) Know a good few African hunters still calling the Gulf Islands home, so they're not all bad. There's good people all places you go, even Quebec. Vancouver is touch and go though.

Yes, my good friend's neighbour was a Captain for Air Canada. You are right though, in that there is a mix of folks.

Thanks, I don't really want to hunt them, I was just interested to see if anyone was since I hear Mayne Island is over run by deer. I hunted Texada last year which was a fun little hunt.
