Anyone hunt with Enfield/98k/Garand??

Is is reasonable to hunt with WW2 era rifles for big game such as deer/moose/bear. Does anyone out there hunt with any of these and what are your experiences?? What do you hunt for??
 
Stories of Uncles / dads / grandpas hunting with 303 Enfields abound.

Personally, I call it hunting with a certain style.

I just recently joined my brother in deer hunting (I only got a variety of birds before - no, not with the Enfield!), but hopefully next fall, I shall aim at one with a (sadly permanently bubba'ed) No4 Mk1 and bring back some steaks.

If the rifle is reliable and reasonably accurate...

I know a few friends who had very expensive rifles, never shot them outside of hunting season, and missed easy targets. They would never admit it though :D
 
my pawinlaw hunts with a m1 garand.
he has a synthetic stock for hunting so that the wood dosent get ruined looks nice
 
If you use a Garand for hunting I believe most provinces require you to use a 5 shot clip--the hunting regs trump the cfc regs on the Garand. I used to use a beater garand for rainy-snowy day hunting when my eyesight was better.

I nailed my first deer (a doe) at about 120 yds with a no.4 Lee Enfield. One shot, one kill! In my humble opinion, I'd have to say from what I've seen that more big game have been taken with the venerable .303 and .30-30 in this country than with any other calibre. Given the proper loading, .303 can take down anything in North America, depending on the skill of the shooter. I once saw a box of 220 gr. Imperial .303 British soft point. The cagey S.O.B. who owned it wouldn't sell it to me. Collector item for sure!
 
"...require you to use a 5 shot clip..." Exempt, in Ontario, as per the FA. Most other Provinces go by the FA too. Both the 10 round .303 and 8 round M1 Rifle are exempt.
Any, .303 British, 8mm Mauser or .30-06 will kill any game you care to hunt with no fuss. Providing the rifle is accurate enough.
 
A couple other milsurp discussion boards have Hunting with Milsurps forums full of pictures of big game shot by all sorts of unaltered military surplus rifles.

The Garand, Enfields and Mausers are all great options, though the peep sights on #4 Enfields and M1 Garands are particularly handy. Some milsurps are easily scoped with special non-altering mounting systems, though you want to do your homework to ensure that you get one that's reliable.

I've hunted whitetail with a .308 K98 several times. Great fun, and milsurps are plenty accurate to get the job done. The key, I think, is to have plenty of practice with the sights before you go out so you know exactly where/how it shoots.
 
I have used an M1 garand rifle for years. put it in a us plastic stock,handguard and forend. just load it up with vasoline to keep the water out and good to go.
 
seems reasonable enough to me... you could ask this monster B.C. mule deer but the one shot from my 1918 BSA enfield shtle 3* kind made him dead in a hurry. I have been putting 3 deer a year in the freezer, every year of the last 12 with this rifle... federal powershock 180 gr SP

I bought a german K98 as well as a Mosin Nigant over the summer. I havent hunted with them yet, but come hunting season they'll be the first ones I'll be useing. You can't improve on perfection. I'll be hunting for either deer or moose. Good times
 
Last year I brought out my Romy M-44 Mosin carbine, didn't really hit much with it, but just the impression left on my farmer buddies(who use the typical .303 and 30-30s); something like " Jeeeebus, that's faaaking loud, what the hell is that", just for that it was worth bring it out:D. Then I got out my trustworthy Vz24 and filled both tags in one day.:)

I've never done so, but I have hunted with those who have. I still see a lot of hunters in Ontario that use the Lee Enfield in it's various guises. The Garand in not so common, but I have hunted with a guy that used one.

They are good for eveything in Ont up to and including moose.
 
I've deer hunted with my '43 Longbranch 35+ yrs. Started off using Imperial ammo ( still have a few 215gr ) , today I use Winchester 180gr CXP3.
Not sure how many deer ( 15-20 ?) from decent sized 8pts to spikebucks and 1 cow moose.
Still...I 'm going to stress what others have stated and get to Know your rifle. ...accuracy is a must . Otherwise a good milsurp will handle anything a hunter is going to run into.

Over the last few years , I bought sporter stocks for hunting , keeping the original stocks safe.

if memory serves, i have taken deer with; longbranch #4, yugo M48, norwegian k98, russian capture k98, polish M44, steyr M95, spanish M93, and maybe one or two more that i can't remember of the top of my head.

i've also taken a steyr M95 on a goat hunt and various rifles out for elk (without success... by choice though), and the yugo M48 on my one and only moose hunt to date (again without success, no legal animals seen).
