I'm just curious how many people hunt with old firearms - say from the first quarter of the 20th century (or earlier)? There's many newer and more powerful examples that are of more recent manufacture, but I was just wondering if anyone uses any of the real old timers for hunting (ya know the ones with all the character).

I'm trying to talk myself into something here so any responses this this question would be greatly appreciated.

thanks :)

Have a comercial single shot Martini made by Alexander Henry in Scotland....
Its in .303 British.........the action is " in the white",and full of scrollwork , lever is color case hardened and scrolled with the 4 digit serial serial number on it.........even forend screw has tooling........ those more knowledgable than I state its pre WW 1 .......

but previous owner (s) bobbed the barrel and chopped the original butt stock and the old Henry rifleing was shot out......

In keeping with owning something old "with character" had the barrel replaced with that of a trimmed down #4 enfield and have an "old " steel Weaver 4 X with post mounted so it can continue to be used for hunting for a few more generations to come...............

........weighs about 6 1/2 lbs.......will shoot 1.5 in/100 yds/3 shots/handloads and when you meet people in the outdoors they all seem to think its "cool"
too that someone would hunt with something over 90 years old........

hs4570.........................................your mileage may vary

A 1910 Ross in 303 and a Savage model 1995 in 30/30.
And one day I will limber up a 577/450 and get it shooting well enough to take a deer with it too.

If I can get it done in time, I will use an 1899 Savage from 1907 next fall, for Her birthday. If I can ever get it to shoot straight I might use my Great Uncles 1893 Lee Metford 303 too.
I love the classic cartridges from the early part of the last century. Right now the only modern one I have is a 6mm and even she is 52years old!

If I could afford it, my hunting rigs would all be Oberndorf Mausers from turn of the century, that would be cool!

oh let's see, most of my stuff was designed, if not actually made then. but i do have a US 1898 .30-40 Krag carbine, serial number puts it's date of production at early 1900, most people have a hard time believing that something so ld can still function and shoot safely. and am in the process of rebuilding a '95 Winchester, not sure to which caliber yet, either .303 or .30-40. and i ordered a CZ 550 Lux in 7x57, figured it was the closet thing to a classic mauser sporter that was available in new off the rack rifles( in my price range anyways)

If I ever get around to it I want to use the old 577/450 Martini Henry to bag a deer but can't say that I've done it yet.

A few years ago, I was black bear hunting in behind Squamish with mine. I did not get one, but the excitement was there! I literally was about two seconds away from bagging one. It crossed the road behind me, as I was walking a logging road, and I looked over my shoulder just as it was going into the bush.
I went back to the same area the following year, but did not see any.
It is fun to be able say I tried.

Check out my pic under "Attenetion Maddog"
Shot a nice 8pt this year with a 1899 Sav in 38-55.
In the past I have used a Win 86 in .33wcf, Win 95 in 303, Sav 1899s in 25-35, 30-30 & 303, Marlin 38-55T/D & a few other I probably forgot
I hope to try a venny with a 50-70 gvt next :runaway:

They still do the job now, they did 100 years ago if you do, and play much less havoc on the meat doing it :)

I have hunted with my Snider(1873) in .577 , a Martini henry in 5777/450, and a couple of other older rifles.
This year I am using a Mannlicher Schoenauer in 88X56.
That rifle was made in 1925.

I regularly hunt with .32/40s, 38/55s, 44/40s and black powder 45/70s, I prefer to use them if possible. For Shotgun hunting I sometimes use an 1860s vintage,Nock 12 ga. 2 1/2" ch. damascus barrelled sxs, with Black Powder and bismuth shot for ducks and geese. I feel the same as you and prefer this type of hunting, although I think replicas of these oldtimers are fine as well!!

One of the old fellas in camp(deer) this year was using a 99 savage his grandfather bought new in 1912 chambered in 22 HP --he also had the 410 conversion barrel for it

I still use my Mauser built in 1895 by Loewe in Berlin and it still puts venison on the table. Not bad for a rifle that is 111 years old. My truck rifle is a sporterized Swede M94, circa 1900, and it has taken countless deer. Another 100+ year old rifle that performs flawlessly.

Use the Following: 6.5x54MS 1924,Remington model 8 35 remington 1930,Krag 1898 30-40,1908 Mauser(in 284 win) and killed deer with each. Deer didn't seem to know which was which! The model was the same type that nailed Bonnie&Clyde, JITC
