anyone hunt with the .450 Bushmaster?

I'd have fun with the Ruger American Ranch. It's lighter than the Remington 783 and has a better twist rate (1 in 16 vs 1 in 26) for stabilizing boolits
in weights of 300-400+ gr. I would turn a non vented muzzle weight to lose the brake. :d

The itch be growin'. :runaway:

I've been looking at the 450 for a while. looks like it would be a great close range round. lack of ammuntion locally has been the only reason I haven't picked one up. I did notice there is a difference in the rem 783 450 depending on if you are looking at the remington canada or remington usa web site.

Yer right. We get the ones with the olive drab stock & no threaded muzzle. Be nice to see the Ruger A.R in that OD color. The only thing odd I find with the Rem version is the 1 in 26 twist rate they went with. Not ideal for boolits over 325 gr or so but they are a nice rifle though, just not as light as the Rugers.

Well, I had the Ruger M-77 Guide gun in 450 BM and it was indeed a fine rifle in a fantastic walnut stock. I found, however, that the cartridge left much to be desired in terms of case design for feeding and for reloading. I did not enjoy working with this case. The ballistics make this a 100-150 yard round at best, but that's the limit of most hunter's range I expect. A straight-walled rebated rim cartridge is good in some instances perhaps, but there are better choices to be had for use as a hunting round IMO. With so many other better options out there I don't see the need for this cartridge at all. The only fellow I know who owns one and likes the chambering is a large firearms store owner and he only uses it for competitions at the range. He uses only factory ammo and, of course, has a ready inexpensive supply of ammo at his disposal. His rifle is chambered in an AR platform so no practical hunting application there.

For another completely useless cartridge design (unless you live in select states in the US) check out the Hornady 350 Legend. A solution to a problem that did not exist.

I apologize if I was a bit harsh in my initial response. I have been reloading for decades (too many cartridges to list) and the 450 BM is not a joy to work with. In summary then, I do not like it. :)

Back to woodlotowner.....Now you know TWO guys who own a rifle in .450 BM and likes the cartridge........

But I am also a cartridge junkie, and wanted to play with this new-to-me chambering. I haven't hunted with it, but I surely would do so. I have a Ruger American, a nice light ACCURATE rifle with a scope on it of course for these old eyes. I would not use it over a hundred yards I don't think, but many of us hunters only take shots closer than that anyways, whether due to terrain or personal choice.

Make that three guys that own a rifle in .450 BM and like the calibre...I use mine for Ontario whitetail in dense cover. I have the Ruger American Ranch....

I have a Ruger American Ranch rifle in 450 BM it is far more accurate than I imagined it could be.

I load from 200gr FTX to 355gr WLNGC's have taken it hunting but never had a chance to use it on game yet.

I have shot a 1300lbs cow with a broken from leg at my friends cattle ranch with it loaded with the 355gr loads @ 1850fps shot entered 1" high between the eyes at 40 yards cow hit the ground so hard I felt the ground shake I also saw the bullet impact on the ground about 30 yards behind her.

Found the gas check 1/2 way thru her neck.

Doug,

I must concede that the 450 BM is indeed an effective chambering for the ranges you and I encounter. My lack of love for the round stems from the fact I have a very nice ABL in the gov't, which, IMO, is so much better in every regard, and I absolutely did not enjoy my reloading hobby when it came to this cartridge. So, my opinion is based on personal experience and opinion, being heavily weighted on the reloading aspect. I'd love to own and AR in 450 BM, and shoot only factory ammo, but that would be my only recommendation for this otherwise unnecessary cartridge. Cartridge junkies excepted. :)

back to woodlotowner............"unnecessary cartridge" would describe practically any new cartridge for the last fifty years...........

But that doesn't stop me from taking them for test drives!

I hunt deer with a 6.5 x 55 (invented in 1891) and larger game with a 9.3 x 62 (invented in 1905), and carry a .223 (1957) or a .222 (1950) for critters. None of the modern cartridges has found a permanent spot in the hunting battery. YET. ;)

I load for 45 Colt, 454 Casull have thousands of .452" bullets - appropriate powders - primers on the shelf.

I currently am down to just a 4.25" barreled Ruger SRH and a 20" barreled Puma M92 in 454 Casull I shoot both the 45 Colt and 454 Casull in these firearms.

Here is my issue I'm getting older my eyes are now in most cases I cannot focus on my iron sights anymore = I need a scope to be able to shoot accurately.

The Ruger American in 450 BM with a Leupold VX2 2-7x33mm Long Range reticle was the answer to being able to continue to hunt with this bore size.

I just wish we could hunt with an AR here because I would have one with uppers in 224 Valkyrie, 6.8SPC and 450 Bushmaster.

Doug,

I feel a new thread coming on here, being, "What are your keeper chamberings?" Your comment, "None of the modern cartridges has found a permanent spot in the hunting battery yet" is an absolutely relevant comment. I too have been around the mulberry bush with most cartridges known to man, and after 20 odd years of being retired and indulging my hobby, when I go to the safe and look at the lean assembly of 'keepers' lo and behold I see nothing but 30-06, .308 Win, 45-70, 35 Rem, 30-30, 8mm Mauser, and even .243 Win chambered rifles looking back at me.

Some of my exotic (for me) dalliances include 50-95, 30-40 Krag, .451WSL, and more recent aberrations of projectile launchers such as the 450 Marlin, .308 Marlin Express, and the much despised 450 BM. LOL, I just can't get past the state of mind that keeps the keepers in the safe.

My only out of character chambering is my BLR in .270WSM that my late wife bought me when we moved to the woodlot. It's a keeper too, but for different reasons...

Carry on gentlemen. :)
