I've been thinking about getting out and hunting 'yotes for a few years but never really made the plunge. So I picked up a few mouth calls last week and ordered up the mojo super critter... Has anyone had any success hunting over this type of (or similar) decoy without using an e-caller? Any tips or insight on using the super critter and mouth calls?

Thanks,
jay

Lots of times I go out without even turning on my ecaller and had called coyotes in. An ecaller is nice but not essential . A mouth calls and a decoy work really well. Place the decoy about 30-40 yds away (out front) from you and start screaming.... 40-50 secs on........ 40-50 secs silence, repeat for 30-40 mins...no takers move on to the next spot and make sure the wind is not blowing to where the coyote is coming from... Good luck

I use mouth calls rather than an electronic caller, and I find a quivering decoy is great in conjunction with my calling. The one I like best has a furry "sock" hanging off the end of a flexible rod. Sorry, I forget the brand name. It has a nice random action, and even between shakes the wind is usually sufficient to move the furry gizmo enough to attract attention. That's all it does IMHO: it attracts the attention of the coyote away from my position. Once a coyote makes an appearance, my calling is finished...the dog's attention is focussed on the decoy, and I do nothing to change that. In all honesty, a simple feather or piece of fluffy material tied to a branch is just as good as the commercial decoy in most cases.

I try to set up crosswind of the decoy. A lot of coyotes circle downwind and appear from that direction, so I don't like to be positioned directly downwind.

Love'em or hate'em, but it's hard not to respect coyotes. They provide some outstandingly fun and challenging hunting.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm heading out this afternoon to make a stand or 2, hopefully I'll be able to call one in. My mojo critter won't be here for a week or so. I made a poor mans decoy with 2 squirrel tails, a shortened broom stick and some fishing line. I'm hoping there's enough wind to keep them moving to keep the coyotes eyes on it... If they even show up.

I'll let you guys know how it goes!

I bought one this afternoon and went out for an hour. I used a cottontail call in conjunction with the Mojo. I had a fox come right in and it was pretty exciting.
