Anyone hunting with the 150gr TSX in 30-30?

And if so, how are you loading it?

Barnes data online looks pretty dang slow, even if it does supposedly open at very slow speeds.

My old marlin 336 likes 36.0 grains of leverevolution. Put first 3 into half inch at 100 yards. Fourth shot opened it up to just under an inch and was getting 2300fps on my chronograph. I set up water jugs at 100 yards to see how well they expanded and did pretty good. Brobee has an elk hunting video on YouTube and he tests different 30-30 bullets, including the tsx, that’s worth watching

Holy cow!

Besides making your Marlin think its a varmint gun, I'm really happy to hear you got up to 2300 FPS with published info and a 20" barrel!

I've seen the Brobee video, you're right, its awesome. They were very lucky they spined that one though

There's data on the Hodgdon website that will get you 2,300 with a 170 gr bullet, LVR powder, and I've duplicated this in my own rifle. The starting load gives factory velocities, and gives older rifles a break, pressure wise.

p.s. I checked the data for the 150 TSX and it maxes out at 28 grs, 2,020 fps. The all-copper bullet must raise pressures significantly.

I've actually obtained over 2300 FPS with my 1941 Winchester 94 with a 170 grain bullet using 37 grains of LeveRevolution, with no excessive pressure signs.

From what I understand, Barnes bullets need to be flying fast to open up properly, if you are only expecting those velocities with a 150 grain bullet, I'd look for another load.

With respect, that doesn't take into account that a Barnes bullet CAN designed around the cartridge it will go in, and to work in that velocity range, so there is no universal need to drive them fast. For example the 30 cals made specifically for the 300 Blackout are absolute best in class, and the 7.62x39mm 123gr version is pretty great too.

And thats a very nice rifle there!

According to their online data published on their website, the max is 36gr LVR for 2300 FPS from a 24" barrel. The second fastest is 2187 or so, and they descend from there.

From what I can find on the website, the 36 gr load is for conventional cup & core 170 grs. The TSX maxes out at 28 grs/2020 fps.
