Anyone Know Anything About .22LR Birdshot

I shot a racoon in the face from about 7 feet and he just looked at me with a quizzical look on his face. a .22 short removed that look! upon examination, I could see where the shot hit him in the eyes, but didn't even penetrate them.

I haven't tried it, but I'm thinking that the balloons better be the cheap dollar store ones

What brand do you guys use?

CCI with the blue capsule on the end? or the crimped federal or winchester ones?

The Winchester have worked best for me, no complaints kill many ground squirrel.

I have seen them used on squirrels at about 10 to 15 yards and they killed instantly. That was with a crimped shell, not sure what brand. I am always tempted to use them inside my roughly finished cottage but it never seems like the best idea and I just set traps instead.

I tried some of these on a paper target at 15 feet. The shot looked like ground pepper and didn't go through the paper!

May have "doughnutted" around the target (the shot rides in the rifling of the barrels and scatters outward from the center) and what you saw may have been the paper wad or unburnt powder or residue, etc. It should easily penetrate paper.

Had some old Whizzbangs my father gave me. Tried them on a shoot and see target on a barn door from about 10 feet away. Ended up getting most of it right back in the face. Felt like having a handful of sand thrown at me :p
I was really caught by surprise, but in no way injured. Probably only good for knocking finches off a feeder from 5 feet away :p (not that I would shoot at finches anyway)

My experience with the 22 birdshot has been nothing but positive. When I was a kid it was my go to ammo for black birds out to I'd say 20 feet - the fun part is its great practice for leading as they where shot in the air.
We used them just last year at our work place - had a serious problem with black birds and pigeons.
It would be hard to convince me and the black birds for that matter that they did not work - not to mention the fun times and memories that where made. Had to have a direct hit to knock down the pigeon though:eek:
I know they are made for the 22 magnum as well and if had that caliber would definitely give them a try for some added range.

It is the choice for big game butterfly hunters. Be sure to have a buddy back you up with a rubber band and paper clip, in case you wing him and he charges you. I usually wear a nice thick plaid shirt to protect me from stray shot from other, less carefull insect hunters. There's nothing like drinking shot glasses of beer around a tea candle, telling stories about the bug that got away...

Probably just about the most useless cartridge invented...I've found that out of s rifled barrel the pattern opes up into a ring, i'm guessing because the rifling throws the shot in a spiral. One day i'll find an old 22 with a shot out bore and i'll try them again...i have a whole box :S

The CCI blue capsules seem to have less power than the WInchester crimps. Both have thier places. CCI inside shops and sheds and the Winchester crimps outside.:)

I totally agree on them being useless.

I've fired 'em inside the 'ol Barn. They wouldn't go through the roof as a pellet gun would.

I use them all the time for shooting mice, pack rats and squill inside outbuildings.

...love the opportunity to show off my ignorance but, what's a squill? Are they more or, less dangerous than a winged/wounded butterly?
