Anyone know where to get a military barrel for the K98?

I'm trying to desporterize(/restore) a S/27 1937 Erma K98k Mauser which has all matching action components minus the (Sporter) barrel.

I've tried to find dealers for Lothar Walther since they offered a reproduction military barrel but no success.

If anyone knows any place that offers them that'd help me out a lot.

Yeah, I've searched them all up for Canada, the only one that was gunsmith and not a custom gun maker had turned to CNC machining a long time ago. Apparently they had asked to be removed for 7 years.

Oh well, worst comes to worse either I can get a custom barrel maker to make one or cannibalize a RC K98.

Thanks for the info, I'll email Mystic Precision and see if they still offer it.

Couldn't find Norwich but found Sarco, they're out of K98 barrels (same with Tradex) and I don't think they accept international orders.

OP - To help you out, 98 Mauser barrels would have come in many contours, many combinations of diameters and lengths to the steps on the barrel. Kinda want to hang on to your original one, and know the specific model, and perhaps the rifle maker (often scroll marked on left side of the receiver or on the barrel itself) if you want to get a replica to it, in order to use the original wood and fittings. Not all that were chambered to 8x57 were the same. Not all that "look the same" were chambered in 8x57. A Belgium Mauser 98 by FN made in 1950's was chambered in 30-06; the 1908 Brazil were 7x57; the 1909 Argentine were 7.65 x 53, and so on...

Yeah I mentioned I was trying to desporterize/restore a K98K by finding a military barrel which pretty much narrows it down. There shouldn't be more than one type of barrel for a Karabiner 98K, at least to my knowledge. As for caliber, Lothar Walther makes K98k military stepped barrels in a lot of different chamberings so who knows, maybe there's some place that sells the K98k military barrel but in a different caliber. I would stick to 8mm if possible but I would also consider other calibers depending on whether or not I want to shoot it a lot and also price (if there are k98k barrels in other calibers available).

Preferably 8mm Mauser but others might be fine since 8mm is gonna suck my wallet dry if I want to shoot it. What's available? Are they in the stepped barrel contour?

I have a NOS Norwegian 30-06 barrel, with some wrapping remnants and still covered in cosmoline, I could be persuaded to let go. The thing is, you would have to also find a magazine long enough to accept and feed cartridges of that length as well as make a cut on the top of the receiver and feed ramp. Likely not a good option.

Next question, do you have front and rear sights for a barrel??? I suspect you need a complete take off barrel???

There is one other issue, depending on WHICH K98 model you have, the tenon face may be different, rounded, instead of flat.

I will check and see if I have a complete barrel. Likely it will be for the Standard K98.

This rifle is going to be a mixmaster, without any capture stamps. That will put it directly into "shooter grade"

If that were my rifle and I were going to order a new barrel with the proper contours, I would likely choose the 308Win. Way more bullet choices available, cheap brass can be found, even the odd batch of surplus comes up once in a while.

Yeah not gonna cut out the receiver ring like those Norwegian capture 98s. I could order rear sight and front sight if I need to.

Tenon face? It's an pre war 1937 K98k assembled by Erma with the action being all matching is all I know right now (so it should be a standard K98) as it's being imported from the US I haven't received it yet.

I have one, bore is appx 95%, complete with sights, 8mm, one clear Waffenampt on the left side and a couple of acceptance stamps, with capitol letters HE.

The rear sight has the lip for the SHORT upper handguard found on Kar98K. If your rifle is a Czech made VZ24 it will have a full one piece upper handguard, from the receiver ring to the mid stock ferrule.

There are a few marks around the chamber area, likely from the barrel clamp. Nothing that will cause any issues and a cold blue touch up would make them almost invisible.

I have a very difficult time sending pics, so you'll have to take my word for its condition.

PM me if you're interested. Won't be cheap and you pay the dime for shipping.
