Fox, some American made bolt rifles chambered for the 7.62x39 have .308 bores. Unless you already know, slug the bore. It opens up a lot more opportunities.
I loaded some Speer 200 grain spire points in my Howa, just to see if it would handle them well. Recoil was much more noticeable.
Accuracy was OK but velocities weren't fast enough.
A friend of mine shoots hard cast lead 200 grain bullets through his 7.62x39 and he likes them for plinking
I know, off topic. Just wanted to let you know about the extreme.
I tried 165 grain flat base spire point 310 dia CIL bullets I had on hand in my Howa as well.
I didn't check the velocities or do much load development because I only had 35 bullets to play with.
They stabilized well and from what I could tell at 100 yds with a 1 inch high sight in at 25 yds the bullet was hitting 1/4 in below POA at 100, so velocities were very close to the 150 grain bullets mentioned in the previous post
This is a savage, it has a bore designed for a 0.308 bullet but will accept all 7.62x39, so 0.311 bullets as well, must have a forcing cone or something on it.
The twist rate looks to be very fast, surprising as the cartridge is normally stabilizing a short bullet.
I guess I was thinking 150gr but pointed and then thought that it would not expand if I was throwing 303 Brit or 308 bullets down the barrel, the 1800fps threshold would show up quite quickly down range.
I was playing with the 200 grain flat base Spire Point Speer bullets to develop a ''subsonic'' round to see how far out they would stay stable.
They actually stayed stable right out to the 300 yard target, which was the furthest I had at the time.
Noise levels were significantly less without the supersonic bang but muzzle noise was still significant.
Bullet drop at what I would call extened range for this handload was quite severe, making shots at that range difficult to calculate without a rangefinder and a reliable drop rate table for that specific load.
I managed to get 1700 fps with RL7 for top speed, which was quite loud and accuracy was very good at 100yds with groups sub 2moa
