Anyone loading cast for .416 rem practice

I don't know how much your bullet will weigh, but 16.0 grs of Unique pushing 300 gr cast works pretty well in .375 H&H and .375 Ruger capacity cases. If your bullets are in the 350 gr neighborhood that might be a good starting point. I'll check my data when I get home later tonight and see if I can get you some better info.

I've shot the 350 gr RCBS bullet in the .416 Rigby with Accurate 5744. The maximum listed load for both the Rigby and Remington is 55 grains. Recoil is in the cream-puff class, but velocities don't give up all that much to the full power loads of conventional powders. I'm sure there is a lesson in there, but I refuse to learn it.

From what I have here, if you want to try Unique, start with 16.0 grs as I said earlier. If you have primers extruding it means the pressure is low so add a grain and try it again, but I think you'll find it's in the ball park. 18.0-19.0 grs is close to maximum, but don't start there and if pressure and accuracy is good at 16.0 grs I'd stay put.

Tried from 40 to 50.0 gr IMR 4198 and 45.0 and 46.0 gr. IMR4198 shot best at 1.35 and 1.40 inch/ 3 shots 100 yds.. No Chrony results that day of testing.

**Trail Boss Powder is NOT sanctioned for use by Hodgdon Powder Co. in this Ctg.***

Tested 15.5 grains IMR Trailboss to 21.0 Grains ..No fillers used!!

Best accuracy came at 21.0 grains...1242..1223..1230 fps ...1.20 inch/100yds.

....if your going to try UNIQUE.. just go to .458 Win. Mag cast start loads in your Lyman book and try their loads working up...416 Rem. is close to same case capacity (plus the .416's neck).. I had no groups under 3 inches with my cast bullets/Unique Powder.. but no recoil to speak of either.
