I'm a professional in my 30s and I live downtown Toronto. I am looking for a place to target practice and sight my rifle. I originate from a rural community and could shoot from my porch, but alas times have changed. I'm aware of shooting clubs but they are far, expensive, and have waitlists and limitations. I'm also aware of some crown land and similar that would allow shooting, but those are about two hours away, which is quite a ways to zero a scope!

I'm wondering if someone has access to a large property/farm/gravel pit/quarry or similar that could accommodate rifle shooting. Something within 60-90 Minutes of Toronto would be great. Maybe around Whitechurch-stouffville, Newmarket,Guelph, Orangeville, Hamilton, etc.

I'm looking to shoot just a few times a year and won't be on your land every weekend. I could buy you some liquor, kill varmint, teach you to shoot (if applicable), be your friend, barter, or whatever other arrangement you think is fair. I'm aware different counties and municipalities have varying rules on firearms and this is something we can explore if you think we'd get along.

If you or someone you know might be interested let me know!

*liability*

What liability does a land owner have to let someone shoot on their property? Any responsibility for an incident would fall upon the shooter, not the land owner. And even so, people hunting on other people’s property is an extremely common practice!

Wrong... if you give "permission" to use your property as an "impromptu range" you are liable for any damages that might occur to persons or property.

You will be challenged to find any such land 60-90 minutes from Toronto. Even if you are fortunate to gain access to land, there is a high probability that there will bylaws prohibiting the discharge of rifles larger than .22 caliber.

Dufferin County has no caliber limitations. You wanna use a 50 bmg for turning a coyote into goo? It's all good.

Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club, they have Guess Day. They have a 50, 100, 200 and 300 Yard rifle range.

Try Silverdale as well, they have a guess day too.

Oh they have days I can just show up? I can’t find much on websites about that but I can keep looking. In terms of liability, this wouldn’t be anything like a range as described by the RCMP, and wouldn’t fit under that bill.

I've been going to Silverdale as a non member for sometime as I really only shoot in the summer months in weekends so they let you just show up pay 20 dollars and go shoot. Nice range and rso as well.

Many clubs are still accepting members, but you have to get in touch and find out. For example, depending on where you live in Toronto, some of the clubs in Kitchener Waterloo and surrounding area may work better... And I believe most of them are still accepting members.

If you give someone permission and they step in a hole and break a leg on your land, you are liable. And that is the same whether hunting or target shooting.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I’ll dig around some more. I was misinformed maybe about the clubs. The ones I looked at didn’t have open days and were full, but obviously there’s more.

Not true at all, plenty of areas within 90 min that have no restrictions. My family farm is just over 60 min from TO and there is no restrictions at all. On the other hand getting permission to shoot on these lands is another story.
