I was wondering if anyone has experience playing with or hunting with a Mossberg 30-30 SPX 464.

I am going to buy a new lever for hunting and am considering this rifle to pack my flashlight after a day of walking trails etc ...it would be an interesting bush gun...if its ok. Mixed reviews online (like everything)...

Any thoughts from people with experience with the gun?

I don't own one but we sell this model along with a few others including the Rossi (Rio), Marlin (a couple of 336 models) and the Henry's (H009 and H009B).

We don't normally carry the Winchester 94's because they are just too pricey and the market too small.

The Mossberg, Rossi and Marlin 336 (with scope included) all come in within about 100 bucks of each other.

The Henry is hands down the nicest in terms of fit/finish/wood etc, but it's also starting to approach the cost of a Win 94.

Between the Mossberg, Rossi and Marlin I would choose the Marlin - it's the nicest (fit/finish/wood) plus has a scope already mounted - and even if you want better optics, the mounts/rings are already there for the same price as the Mossberg.

The one "peeve" I have with the Mossberg is the "requirement" to keep the lever under "hand pressure" to allow the gun to fire - you have to hold it tight to the stock or the trigger won't move. Now it may be a safety feature (or something like that) and you may get used to it, but in my opinion the very nature of a "brush gun" is to get off a super quick shot that is unlikely to present itself again and I don't need "one more thing to do" to ensure the rifle will fire.

I don't remember if there were any quirks with the Rossi or not. Have never sold one so can't even point to a customer who has said good/bad/ugly or other.

I own a Win 94 (1957 model) but wouldn't recommend a new Mod 94 (not worth the money). If you don't mind spending a bit I would go with a Henry.

If that's more than you want to spend then (my opinion), the only lever worth looking at (in 30-30 anyhow) is a Marlin 336 (scoped model - better value than the bare 336)......

I am having difficulty locating one in canada with the full rails and flash sup....any ideas?

The new ones have short front rails only without flash sup that i can see

Graham thats awesome feedback...I been thinking about that issue. I have been debating between the ztactical moss berg 446 spy and marlin 336w (my fave of that line up)

I own the Cabelas Mossberg 464 laminate marine coat, the 464 SPX and a Marlin 336c. Marlin is better made, but for some reason the Mossberg shoot better and feed better. The Marlin has a really tight chamber , the Mossberg SPX is my favourite - light, maneuverable and fun (I originally thought it was a monstrosity).

Yup, I can understand this, surprisingly it hasn't been an issue for me. However, I do get hung up on 1911's with grip safety the way I hold them from time to time ... so I see this being an issue for some.

i really want one, its old school meets new school, tactical guys hate it, old school guys hate it, and theres people like me who want it cause its makes both of those guys cringe while they look at it, but ive heard it shoots fantasticits hard to track one down.

I would like the rifle much more if it came in smaller or pistol caliber. 30-30 is a bit pricey for sh*ts n giggles at the zombie range. I have the standard 464 in wood and it shoots and operates well otherwise, just expensive to shoot all day.

I know but for a center fire hunting round, it's as cheap as they get. I asked ammosupply for a deal on 30-30, it may happen =)

I've yet to try out the "zombie whacker" model of this rifle, but it does have a fair share of folks that go
for paramilitary style gear. At least they're set up for hangin' all manner of accessories onto.

For me though, I'll stick with my more traditional styled 464.;)

I remember when Mossberg only made a couple models of shotguns, and a couple models of rimfire rifles....
Thry make some weird #### now lol

My nephew has one and he loves it
It is his truck/camp and often hunting rifle
I would love to know if that stock would fit on my Rossi ranch hand

No chance of getting a 464 butt stock onto a Rossi as the Mossberg stock is held by a lengthways bolt through the stock. The Rossi stock is mounted on tangs via a vertical bolt through the grip. Whole different animal.
