Anyone own an M48 and RC k98

I realize that there was a similar thread to this one a couple weeks ago but it left me with more questions. I was wondering if anyone here owns/has handled both a new Yugo M48 and an RC k98. I was wondering how these two specific types of mausers stack up against each other; mostly in terms of fit and finsh.

Also, when dealing with RC k98's, are the pre-war and early war rifles that much better than the later war ones. With such a mishmash of parts does date on manufacture hold that much importance in terms of quality.

I can't comment on the M48's as I have never owned one.

As far as the K98's, early war stuff has better fit and finish than later war but typically no difference in performance/accuracy. Like you pointed out though, with a mix of early and late war parts in a typical RC K98, you aren't really getting an early or late rifle but a mix of both. One thing to consider with the bores of both types of K98's though is that early rifles, due to their age, may have seen more action so may be shot out a bit more. Not always the case (my RC '37 S42 has got an excellent bore), but something to consider when buying.

The fit and finish on RC's is random - sometimes hte parts the Russians threw together fit great, other times not as much. The M48 was not hte best made mauser ever produced, but it's a solid rifle and will be much more consistently fit and finished than an RC K98.

a decent RC 98 is a better rifle than any M48 that i have shot or handled.

I'd hold out for a decent RC over an M48. P&S Militaria still list some interesting RC's, pay extra for a superior one. The M48's are postwar so you'd expect finish to be better but ones I've handled were not, fine as "shooters" I'm sure. I'd go with a select RC and clean it up a bit.

pretty much every VZ24 that i have seen has been beat to sh#t, so i can't comment on initial quality.

there are brno made 98k's among the russian captures though.

The only thing certain with a RC is that the barrel and receiver match, however, ever other part on it doesn't match. Buy the best Bore you can find.

Agreed. with an RC, it's all about bore condition. After that, it's stock bedding - but since these all have mix and matched stocks, it's a crap shoot. You CAN fix bedding issues though if the rifle tends to wander around on paper. You cannot easily fix a bad bore though.

I have the stereotypical RC problem with my gun shooting WAY low.

When I went to the range, I had to aim about 2 feet low at the 200m gong to hit it.

Did the russians readjust the sites after the war? I sure can't tell. It must be something to do with their rearsenalling process.

I think it's an issue with both the bedding not being original and the front sight being one randomly selected from a box?

Do you mean that it is shooting high? (You have to underaim to hit the target?)
My latest shooter RC K98 (as most of my previous owned ones) have had this problem. Slapped a Swede 96 front sight blade on there and problem solved!!

Yeah. My bad. I meant that it shot way high. Steve, you have a Swede 96 front blade on hand? I could use an excuse to go on a road trip this summer.

Sorry, I just got the one blade at a recent gun show to fix my RC's problem. They seem to be a lot easier to find than K98 front sight blades. Also, you don't have to worry about the replacement blade also being too short with them (which it could be with a K98 replacement). The Swede blades are very tall and should have plenty of height to bring down POA. I am sure someone on here has an extra one kicking around.

I have both, an M48 BO and a couple of RC K98k's. Pending on which RC you get their quality exceeds a new unfired Yugo. Don't get me wrong the Yugo is a nice Mauser, but for whatever reason a nice RC is better, smother etc. JMHO.
