hey guys I'm looking to get into hunting this year and I was wondering if anyone has experience or opinion on the savage axis? I plan to hunt coyotes primarily, possibly deer. is the .223 cartridge sufficient to drop coyotes and deer with a good shot placement? any help would be appreciated

Savage Axis by all accounts is a great gun. Jerry at Mystic Precision did an amazingly through torture test on one and it came out very well in my mind. 270 WIN is also a decent choice for caliber as well.

The .223 is too small to give reliable hits and kills on Deer. For Coyotes, it is good.

Do yourself a favor, and buy a .243 Axis, rather than the .223. It is not only very effective on Coyotes, but with the proper bullets, (100 grain hunting rather than thinner jacketed varmint bullets,) it will take Deer nicely.

The Savage Axis is a good, inexpensive, and accurate rifle. The price right now is about $309 at Cabelas or Wholesale Sports, but for another $30, you can get the combo-package that has a Bushnell scope and mounts. Go for the package, and use it for a while, with the ultimate aim of replacing the cheaper scope with a better one.

Hundreds of thousands of deer and wild hogs a year killed with 223's across the US and overseas.... Put a big game bullet like the 64gr PowerPoint or 45/50/53/55/62 gr TSX/TTSX etc. into the vitals and deer die. Not rocket science here.

got me a savage axis in .223 a little while back, dead on out of the box, headin out in the morning for yote
haven't had any problems with her yet, stock flex is a little weird but doesn't do any harm to the performance

I use mine for hunting all the time. Gophers/coyotes. If I could I would use it for deer as well. As long as you stay within its limits and use good shot placement I see no problem. Hornady also makes a 55gr gmx bullet.
