As I am tooling up to get into CAS I have a chance to get a sanctioned Winchester in 16g. Anyone else shooting that gauge.

Other than perhaps not powering over some targets how do you find it?

Also what is the ammo cost relative to 12? higher/lower?

Thanks in advance for any first hand experience to be shared.

Forget it! By a 12 gauge! I bought my wife a SxS 16 ga a few years back and it was a pain to find cheap factory loads. Recoil is twice what the recoil is with a 12 gauge. Most of the ammo available is twice the price of Winchester Universal in Canadian Tire. When you can actually find factory ammo you have little or no choice in type, you buy what is available whether or not you like it.

I use 16ga. for skeet shooting. I reload 16ga. and it costs about the same to reload as 12ga. and it costs about the same to reload 12ga. as it does to buy 12ga target loads. 16ga works as good or better than 12ga and you get to shoot a lighter gun.

I see you are in southern Ontario. Try calling a gun store or reloader supplier and ask the price of 16 gauge stuff. Atfter the snikers and laughing dies down, go buy a case of Winchester lite recoil low noise shot shells in 12 gauge then get a gun to shoot them.

powder and shot and wads and primers and once fired cases for 16ga do not cost any more than they do for 12ga.!!!

If you are talking about an 1897 Winchester in 16 gauge there are several top shooters who use them. They work well for shooters with small hands, the smaller shell size allows them to pull 4 plus and still work the action without fumbling. The down side is the ammo is slightly more expensive and often harder to find in a target load. Most of the shooters using them are shooting Federal # 6's because they are the easiest to find at any of the major sporting goods stores like Cabelas or Wholesale Sports.

On the other hand with practice most shooters can master pulling 4 of the 12 gauge at a time. I currently have 7 1897's in 12 gauge and 2 in 16 gauge.
