Hi, just wondering if anyone owns or has tried the new Savage Model 42 combo gun? I want to get a combo 22/410 in the model 24 but they are hard to find in my price range.

Though I don't like the looks as much, I am considering buying a new model 42. Does anyone know how open the open bore patterns? Is it going to be any good for taking rabbits at 20 or so yards or is it more of just a play toy? I plan on taking this out for grouse, squirrels, and cottontails.

Also does the manual ejector work ok? I saw a video where it looked like it had problems ejecting the 22 shells.

Any help with my decision would be great..... or someone could sell me a model 24 for a reasonable price under $500

I have one:

Pros:
- light weight
- feels better than it looks
- controls work well
- handles nicely
- 22lr barrel groups well
- .410 barrel groups well with slugs
- choke is good for fast close range shots (pattern covered a 22" by 22" sheet of paper at approx 25m)
- barrels are well regulated for windage (POI matched from side to side)

Cons:
- can be fiddly to get 22lr shells in and out of the chamber, next to impossible with gloves on
- doesn't fold in half or take down for compact travel
- sights are black plastic front and rear
- not enough elevation adjustment to zero at 25m (shoots approx 4" high with 22lr and approx 8" high with slugs)
- barrels are not regulated for elevation (approx 4" difference with solid projectiles at 25m)
- mounting a scope can prevent access to hammer for cocking and barrel selection
- you can't close the action with the hammer cocked (ie. open action to change the type of shot shell then can't close it without de-cocking the hammer)

I put a few rounds through mine yesterday both from the 22 mag barrel and the 410 barrel and I think this is going to be a fun gun for grouse and gophers and getting my nieces, wife and daughter into shooting. Would it be nicer with wood stocks, sure it would , would it be nice to have ejectors or an auto extracter ? Yes but at the end of the day it works and shoots great for my intended purposes.
