Hello folks! Opportunity just arose to pick up a Vangaurd in 257 Weatherby for a real good price. As I hunt country where deer and moose both frolick, I'm curious how a smaller projectile performs on the heavier body of moose.

Anyone please share your experience with these!

Anyone know of a good factory load for moose? I understand that the bullets make-up affects performance on game much more than calibre.

Thanks for helping me make a decision, to buy or not to buy :D

I have killed elk with a 257wby, and a hunting partner used his 25-06 to kill moose. We both used premium 100gr bullets, and if I had to use a .257" bullet again, I would be using the Barnes TSX/TTSX, or a similar monometal bullet.

I've used a .25 wssm (very similar to the wby) on 3 moose and friends have used it on multiple bulls as well. Always had good penetration even with 120 gr Winchester power points, even a few pass-throughs. If I was working up a load I'd pick Barnes tsx's or nosler partitions or accubonds.

When I was a teen ager, a veteran trapper friend told me that neither a 25-20 nor a 32-20, was big enough for moose. He said if the bullet of either hit a rib on the way in, it would not get to the lungs.
Anything bigger, or stronger he said, was OK for moose.
He and his trapper pals used quite motely variety of rifles, including the Winchester 351 SL and the 44-40, on moose.
He probably would have said a 257 WBY magnum was more than you needed for moose.

Any good quality bullet that is stoutly constructed for penetration and expansion will be fine.I knew a lady that used nothing but 120gr Partitions in her's and all the moose she shot at died.Stay away from shoulder shots.

I'd stay away from shoulders and wait for a broadside shot. Go for the lungs and use a premium bullet. I'd go nosler partition or tsx although I've never tried them in my gun yet

The 115tsx can crush the heavy shoulder bone down low on the off side. Shot was 90yards on a huge farm land bull. Bullet exited as well

I use 100 ttsx in my 25-06 257 wby, and 25x284. I have shot moose over 400 yrds, one at 360 and one at 75 feet. Also a caribou at 320 yrds. All 1 shot. Barnes bullets in any cal. really do well. 257 diameter is my all time favorite.

My friend used a .257 Wby w/120gr Partitions for moose. It worked well. My other friend also has one, and is bringing it on our moose hunt this year.
