Thinking of using a #1 buckshot ball and small amt of pistol powder likely Unique to make grouse loads for my CZ 527.Not sure what to expect but 25-50 feet would be max range. Will look for some .310-.311 shot or mold to try.I have a box of #1 buck but .300 will be too small.I have a Lee .311 Tokarev mold I may try....should one use pure lead or WW's ?..another thought perhaps pulled 123gr FMJ's in boxer cases with Unique around 1000fps ...Harold

just load a 123 grain cast bullet, plain base or gas checked and load then down with either pistol powder or trail boss

Perhaps .30 Herrett or .300 Whisper [sub-sonic] data as not to spook big game while filling the pot? Harold

pretty sure I have cast data for the x39, but if you want to go that route then you can load jacketed bullets down to 950 feet per second and keep them quiet, have data stashed somewhere for that as well

I've used #0 Buckshot sized to 0.314" in a Lee Lube-sizer in the 303 British. The Buckshot is 0.320" and sizing it down gives it small flat sides that can be gripped by the neck and enough to fully engage the rifling. It only weighs about 50 grs, and I used 3.0 grs of Red Dot. I couldn't hit paper at 100 yds with the few I shot and didn't chrony them, but I suspect that they were supersonic. I have no doubt that they'd work well at 50 yds or less (certainly 25-50 feet), and with more time, I might have even got them to group at 100 yds, but probably never better than about 10 MOA at that distance IMO.

You'd probably use about 3.0 grs of Unique in the smaller 7.62X39 case, and you'd want to be very sure that every ball exits the barrel. I typically work down to the point where it gets iffy (i.e. 500 fps), and then add 25% more powder as a start load to be sure.

I use #0 buckshot for all my 30cals, 303brit, and up to 8 x 57. They don't need to be sized because they are soft lead, and will just swage down. 5gr of trail boss, or 4gr of Tin Star work well. Accuracy is good out to 25yds or so.

If you come across that data, post it if you would please ? I have data somewhere as well for sub-sonic 220gr + but that seems excessive for plinking chickens.Three grains of Unique and a standard primer is what I was thinking as well for a ball..........Harold

I use 00 buck (.330") sized down to .311" or .314". You get a longer bearing surface than with 0 buck. Tumble lubed with Lee liquid alox. Use it in many .30-ish cal rifles (Mosin, Lee Enfield, .308 Mauser, etc.). Also used 00 buck sized to .323" in an 8x57mm.

With ~5gr of most any pistol or shotgun powder they can hit a grouse at 25yds pretty easily. It was 8-10" at 50yds if memory serves (don't have my records handy).

I use Lee mold 312-160-2R, Alox lubed, over 6 grains of Trail Boss. Very effective. Could download more, but this one has enough juice to ruin a close range coyote's day too, so it serves double duty...

I like the sounds of the 0 buck sized down. Fargone, since you're not using a sizer like Andy do you use a more aggressive mouth flare? Or do you just clean out the shaved off lead from the seating die now and then? Other?

I haven't done it for 7.62 x 39 but I have done it with .308 Win and 30-30 brass. I used 00 Buck pellets. I did not size them, I just tapped them into the neck of the unsized, primed case with a plastic mallet, they are soft lead and they were sized on the way in. I put about 4 gr of Bullseye in the case, just for close range plinking. They worked fine and it was dead simple to do.

start with 17 grains of H4895 and any 150 grain jacketted bullet, work up to 28 grains if you like

contact suputin on here, that is his website listed above and he has lots of data for subsonic x39 loads, most of what I have came from him at one time, lots of which you load the bullets backwards in the case

I don't flare the mouth, it's already stretched from the previous firing. I don't resize the cases either. I just deprime, reprime, powder, and seat the ball halfway into the case. This may shave a little lead, but not much, and accuracy is good, but normally print about 2" lower at 25yd than a full power load. Loads like this cost somewhere around 12 cents each, so are good for cheap plinking.
