I am going to start reloading for my 1886 in 45-90 and have seen starline brass alot cheaper than Bertram brass.I've heard that starline has some probs with gas leakage around the primer pockets,is this true and are there any other probs with this brass.
Thanks, 88

I've used both Bertram and Starline in my 1886, 40-82. Much prefer Starline as it is heavier-walled and stands up much better to continual reloading. Don't reload full loads though. No problems at all.

For 40-82 reloads, I've used IMR 4198 (24.0 gr.), IMR 3031 (34.0 gr.) and have settled on Unique (14.0 gr.) with a 1/4 TP wad. Until the Fall of 2005, I lived in Ontario and found that IMR 4198 and IMR 3031 wouldn't always ignite when shooting at -20 C (primer always did though, dumping mostly unburnt powder through the action when the case was extracted and leaving a bullet part way down the barrel - real fun at -20) so changed to using Unique with a 1/4 TP wad tamped on top of the powder - solved the problem. Bullet was always a cast Lyman 403169 (245 gr.) of various alloys but lately #2 alloy. My 1886 was made in 1887 and from info. gathered from various sources, the rifling in these early, softer-steel barrels will not tolerate many jacketed bullets before it shows significant wear - don't know if it's true but since my 1886 has a decent barrel, I want to take care of it.

I have used Starline brass in 38Super for an IPSC open gun. The only difficulty with the thicker case is when you are filling the case within 1.5mm to start with. Sometimes you runout of case capacity.

Thanks guys. Now that I know it's a good brass, where do I buy it from.I've seen it on ebay and the guy wont return q's about shipping to Canada.Hepl would be really great.

I have a 45-90 Browning in a BPCR as well as a couple of 45-70s. I shoot in cartridge rifle competitions often and the brass I use is STARLINE. It is consistent and tough. Started with 200 rounds of brass and still have 200 for the 45-90.
Carry on!

Twice, I've bought 40-82 Starline brass a couple of years ago when I lived in Ontario. The Canadian source is Bruno Gross (Bullseye Reloading Supplies), Box 1798, Fairview, AB. T0H 1L0. (780) 835-4648. Shipping from AB to ON each time was approx. $7 (two or three years ago). Bruno is an excellent person to deal with and is one of the old-fashioned, trusting individuals that has integrity - as many gunnys do. He is a little difficult to get in touch with as his main source of income is farming and he does the reloading supplies on the side. Best to try and call him in the evenings. I met a dealer at a gunshow in Burnaby this morning that also sells Starline brass. I don't know if he ships but you can call for details - D.J. Friesen Imports (www.bcredneck.com), 6465 Evans Rd., Chilliwack, B.C., V2R 1K0. Phone/Fax (604) 858-6098 dave@bcredneck.com

As a trial, I used 45-70 brass sized directly in 40-82 dies. This worked fine but the brass is about 1/10" short compared to 40-82 brass and I wasn't sure if this short brass would allow erosion around the chamber area in the soft steel barrel so stopped using it.

Ah yes, now I remember. It wasn't 40-82 Starline brass that I ordered. It was Starline 45-90 brass that I bought and sized in 40-82 dies. Then trimmed to length as necessary. Can't remember why I bought 45-90 brass but it had to be for either availability or price. Sorry for any problems I created.

I found this old thread thru a search...

I just ordered 250 454 Casull brass direct from Starline.

The lady that took my order is from Canada she told me as long as the order is under $100 they can ship direct across the border to what ever address you give them...

Go direct to Starline as suggested. http://www.starlinebrass.com/ If your order is over $100 (they sell only in packs of 250, 500 and 1000 and many cost more than $100), you have alternatives:

"Track of the Wolf" sells them in amounts as small as singles. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/

"Blue Star" sells in packs of 100, 500 and 1000 http://www.blue-star-inc.com/

These companies are all fast, effecient and professional. They have stuff in stock, and accept credit cards. I used to recommend Dave Friesen, (bcredneck) but too slow, too many "out of stock, don't know when I 'll get it", or simply no response whatsoever, to an e-mail and I got the message.
