Anyone use the Tradex SKS Muzzle breaks

If Comrade rifle designer Simonov had intended to put decadent capitalist muzzle brake on Simonov system carbine of 1945, glorious proletarian armament factory workers of Tula and Izveshk arsenals would have put them on rifles before issuing them to brave Red Army soldiers, comrade! Vodka ration denied! If recoil from 7.62x39mm too much, you are clearly shooting with hangover!

:p

Seriously, though, no; I hear they tend to fall off.

I bought a pin on brake and installed it. The slots for the pin needed to be filed so it would go on straight (it was deeper on one side than the other. The pin that came with it was too large to go through the hole in the front sight. I made a pin out of mild steel (same material as the included one) that would fit through the hole, pinned er on, and went to the range. Less than 40 rounds and it fell off.

These brakes are cheap and don't do anything for recoil. The bore on mine was over half an inch, so it was more of a flash hider than anything. A flash hider that i almost shot when it was dangling on the end of the barrel.

My opinion : Don't bother. You can't extend the bayoned with them on, and they don't work. PERIOD.

Yup... recoil has never been a threat, or concern for the sks. Anyone who wants a muzzle brake.. must be for tacticool purpose only... or totally a wimp...:)

Or Carry it on a Farm/Ranch in Tractor/Truck muzzle down empty chamber (for safety) and don`t want the actual muzzle crown on the muddy/snowy floor mat. This is how I use to carry the AR15 for years until it was legislated Restricted

Or holding butt of rifle against forehead!!! :D

The choate brake is probably a little better quality than the chinese ones :) It looked like they milled the slits with a broken cutter, and there was chatter all through the inside bore of the chinese one that i bought. Fit poorly, and the end of the bore was almost the same size as the expansion chamber and it did not reduce muzzle flip or recoil any noticeable amount. It DID look kinda cool :S

If you're concerned about recoil, my 6 year old son shoots my sks off of a sandbag with no problems, even though the tiny sks stock is a little too long for him. Recoil is not a factor at all.

I bought the bolt on type from another source.

AFAIK they are made by NC Star and are an AK74 look alike. The fit was sloppy to say the least. I used about 1/16" of aluminum shim stock wrapped around the barrel at the clamp point to take up the slack.

The brake is LOUD. Really loud. Unpleasantly loud. It works though. I wanted it to reduce muzzle rise and it did. But I didn't care for two things: the added weight; and did I mention the noise?

I ended up modifying it so it looks more like a Russian slant style AK brake. Muzzle rise is reduced and the sound blast is directed downrange where it's supposed to be.

Can someone explain how a piece of add on steel with slots in it, reduces muzzle rise when the rifle has no serious recoil.? What do those slots do to reduce recoil or rise in the muzzle in a simple sks rifle... Im confused.

Should I get one for my fully charged 45-70 loads to make them shoot like a 22?.;)

In the Choate brake, some of the gas which are pushing the bullet forward get to escape upwards through the brake slots. Gas going up = pushing down on the muzzle = reduce muzzle climb. If some gas is directed backwards, then it also reduces recoil (by pulling the rifle forward). Whether or not this is something one needs on a SKS is a personal choice...
