Can't seem to find official Hodgdon data for Trail Boss with 150gr bullets. Does anyone load something like this? I know Trail Boss low pressure so I might just tinker around with it.
mark where the base of the bullet is inside the case when seated to your desired OAL. Fill case to this point, weigh the charge. This is your Max load, you can multiply it by 0.7 for the minimum load
Quickload shows a 150gr Hornady RNSP @ 2.55" OAL, 100% load density is 11.3grs Trail Boss (predicted 1440 fps 20" brl). Starting load would be approx 8 grains for 1200 fps
And an empty 30-30 case holds 14 grains of Trail Boss when filled to the brim or ~12 grains powder capacity when allowing for seating a bullet. Therefore the IMR/Hodgdon listed max of 9 grains puts it at around the 75% of usable powder capacity.
I have to say it works incredibly well. I've done TB loads in 303 and 308 they're an absolute hoot. Recoil and noise is more than 22LR but not significantly. Definitely leaves some powder fouling, but not a big deal.
Whatever you do, don't let a compressed load happen.
That's about the only dark side to Trail Boss.
Once you've determined your seated bullet depth volume, back off a wee smidge to make sure the powder's got some "maraca" room in there.
I loaded some 160’s from Hodgdon’s data, but the data should be safe with 150 gn bullets. I loaded 7.0 to get my son used to the Marlin 336, max is listed as 9.0, have fun!
I made up Trail Boss loads for my .308 Win. Used 150 grain Berry plated bullets intended for the 30/30. 14 grains of TB gave me a velocity of just over 1500 FPS in a 22" barrel. Fun & mild load that is surprisingly accurate in my rifle. As stated, do not compress the powder charge and follow the instructions provided by todbartell.
