Anyone used a Savage Mk1 singleshot? Looking for a new silhouette rifle...

Hey folks. I've been shooting metallic silhouettes for 6 months now and really loving the sport and getting more into it every time I go. I'm finding that my inexpensive Marlin XT22 is somewhat uncomfortable and I'm planning to replace it with another rifle that will be better for silhouette shooting. The reliability and accuracy of the Marlin have both been fine, but the magazine is the big issue. The rules of the sport are such that mag-fed guns must be mag-fed and the mag on the XT22 is in a bad spot for the way I need to hold the rifle.

The ideal gun for me for shooting silhouettes would be a high accuracy 22 rifle in a single-shot bolt action. The lack of a mag is great, and I have no need for magazines in this slow-paced shooting sport.

I see Savage has a Mk1 single shot model still available. I've shot a Mk2 before and it was great, but I wanted to know if anyone has experience with the Mk1 and whether I should be concerned about the low price tag on it. It has an accutrigger, which I believe means I can adjust it to a very light trigger pull? That is something that I need from my new gun.

If anyone has other suggestions, I'm all ears. I am interested in CZ rifles as well, but am open to brand as long as my criteria are met:

- good or better accuracy
- standard hunting rifle design (no heavy target barrels, no thumbholes, etc)
- either single shot or fed by a small capacity magazine that is flush in the stock
- bolt action, no semi-autos

Thanks!

There's a long-running thread on single-shot mag well inserts over on RimfireCentral. Then you can use a nice, accurate MkII as a single shot, and pop the insert out whenever you like, to have a multi-shooter again. Best of both worlds...

I did see those and it's a pretty great idea, but unfortunately for silhouette competitions, mag-fed guns must be mag-fed during competition. Thus only factory single-shots may be used as such (in sanctioned matches).

In any case, I have now found a new silhouette rifle. I ended up choosing a CZ 455 American because the magazine is quite flush and the gun is more comfortable for my shooting position than my previous rifle. I think it will work out nicely.

Can't comment on the Savages, but CZ Mags are not flush with the stock - they stick out right where I like to place my hand for offhand shooting :(

They aren't 100% flush, I realize, but they are much better than a Mk2 or a Marlin XT22, which sticks out an inch or more.

I see, an inch or more! If you do decide on a CZ, one thing that might help is if you can get hold of an older Brno mag - they don't stick out as far as the newer CZ mags with the plastic base plate ;)

Smart man! But as others have said, CZ mags still stick out and hurt my support hand knuckles when shooting off hand target style.

But as to your question regarding the Savage MKI, I got a MKIGY wood stock with Accutrigger for my grandson. Superb accuracy and trigger. One-hole five shot 25 meter groups with cheapo bulk Winchester ammo using the stock notch iron sights. Insane accuracy on par with my CZ452s and Winchester 69A, bonus is the real nice fit and finish as well.

If I ever see one kicking around second hand or on trade and I have the room in the budget I'll definitely be considering getting it anyway. There were just none anywhere around here when I was shopping. In any case, I won't do badly with the CZ.
