it seems to give pretty high veloiries for 9mm (125g listed at @1235fps) I started using it a couple of weeks ago :)

haven't seen a whole lot of loading date for the powder so curious what anyone else uses.

Holy Crap 7.2 grains. I have them down at 4.8 for around 900 fps ok its for a 124 FMJ RN

I did not bench rest fire my HK but they seem quite accurate, I am still fiddling with the COL..

4.8 gr Power Pistol
Assorted Cases
124 FMJ RN Frontier bullets
Winchester primers

COL 1.110 (This is a bit short) Reloading my next batch at 1.150

4.8 gr Power Pistol
Assorted Cases
124 FMJ RN Frontier bullets
Winchester primers
that's pretty light; I use the same bullets and primers but I used 6.5gr...

I want to get some 138gr-ers but not sure how much powder I would have to use...hmm

Hornadays Handbook Reloaders Cartridge Volume 1 Printed in 2003

Power Pistol for 230 gr

4.3 gr @ 900 fps
4.7 gr @ 950 fps
5.0 gr @ 1000 fps
5.3 gr @ 1050 fps
and the NEVER EXCEED 5.7 gr @ 1100

For the HP-XTP COL 1.060"
FMJ-RN COL 1.150"

For the 147 gr bullets the NE is 5.2gr of Power Pistol.

I tend to believe that the values are conservative, but I do think that 6.5gr is on the Very Hot side of things.

The real question is why run them up so high? Paper will yield at slower speeds and this puts less stress on the equipment.

I want to run this load in IPSC production, my only issue is with my COL, mine is a tad short and I have a jam once in a while.

I will increase my COL by .040 to 1.150 and maybe just maybe increase the load by .1 gr to 4.9gr

What pistol are you using , if I may ask ?

why Beretta of coruse :)

in my LEE reloading chart that came with my dies they list 6.6gr as max load for 125gr FMJ and 5.7gr as max for 147gr XTP. These same numbers are also listed on the Alliant website;

http://recipes.alliantpowder.com/rg.taf?_function=pistolrevolver&step=2&bulletID=22&cartridgeID=1014&caliber=9mm&cartridgedescr=Luger&bulletdescr=125%20FMJ

the preasure of these loads are 34,000psi, now +P rating for 9mm starts at 35,000psi so I think it's pretty safe.

I do have concerns about using Frontier bullets as FMJ for max loads, I’m only starting to use Power Pistol and only shot about 100 rounds of 6.5gr/124gr w/o any problems but will probably go down to 6gr. I’m getting some 138gr and plant to work up to 5.9gr for those.

If numbers where absolute I would agree.

However there is only a small margin of error. When i started reloading I was always looking to max out a load, especially when i was reloading .45acp.

What I did find was that I would tire out at the range alot faster, and was putting undue stress on my HK.

I started to reduce my loads, actually I have just as good if not better accuracy and its alot more enjoyable.

Its not that I want to bash your recipe, but given the circumstance of the shooting reality in Canada, besides hurling lead downrange faster, what purpose does a hot load serve?

Try a lighter load and see how it feels..

My 2 cents

I have, but I simply enjoy shooting warm loads more esp in 9mm. When I load .44mag I never go max because I can only shoot so much before it becomes painful, but with 9mm I don't have that problem since it doesn't have that much recoil anyways and I just don't want it to feal like a .22...

btw starting load for PP for 125gr FMJ is 6gr...

Yeah I saw that in the Lee book

6.0gr and 6.6gr NE

I checked the Hornaday Reloaders and find a huge gap for each load.

I will check the bullet sizes and see if the Hornadays seat a bit deeper, which should explain this difference.

I have to admit that I am puzzled by this.

Since one states that with a 5.0 gr I should have about the same velocity as what Lee stated in his tables for 6.0gr

Thats a whole grain of powder ..

I will email Hornaday and Lee on this...

Just keep enjoying the sport.
