Anyone using the Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 1 for Trap?

They work just fine for recreational ( club level) trap. 28” barrels minimum for a smooth steady swing. Of course being a field gun the recoil will be heavier than a target gun but it will break clays for years and years. If you get really serious about competition you will eventually move to a true competition gun but you’ll enjoy your time with the SP1.

Got my first 25 using a 30" 686 SP1 sporting model so yes they can be used for trap. It weighed about 7 3/4 lb so recoil was never a problem. It's also quick enough for skeet low gun if ever want to try it there.

Practically any shotgun can be used for trap but some models are more suited to the game than others. The SP1 is a field gun and made to be carried all day so with it's light weight the recoil might wear a person down a bit quicker than a target gun that has more heft to it. That said lots of people use field guns for trap but you won't see any really serious top shooters with them. The 686 is a time proven design and well known for it's reliability so there's no question that the gun will be up to the task.
I suppose one question might be your use of terminology, some people refer to all the shotgun sports as "trap" when the different games all have individual names such as trap, skeet sporting clays, 5 stand, etc. If your looking for a gun that will work for all the diciplins then a sporting clays gun will be the best compromise with a field gun being second. But then again maybe you really mean just the game of trap.

What would you consider a true competition gun? I'm looking at getting an o/u for use in trap and skeet and am trying to find the best options

Any gun that is designed specifically for the game of trap and has an earned reputaion. Some guns that come to mind are Browning Bt-99 or Citori Trap, Beretta X models (686x, 682x, Dt-10X or 11X), Perazzi has a lot of Trap models such as TM1 etc... Ljutic, Kreighoff and others.
