How would one modify a maglight to give a small center spot for aiming purposes, with reasonable peripheral vision? For embassy storming and such.

Oh that's easy.

Get like an XM-L2, maybe 5D3 on a Noctigon Chassis, fit it into a KD S006508 over an LD-2C.
MN mod the tower of a 2C body, drop the tail spring to fit a pair of 18650's and Mums the Word!

You could even go MT-G2 or XHP with one of the new LD-2D's. You'd get a wider centre but the output will really punch.
