Title pretty well says it all. I see this stuff is relatively cheap online, they call it 'government surplus' whatever that means in this day and age...

Is it okay for handgun ammo? I am a n00b and may be overlooking something obvious. Mostly interested in .38 Special, .45 Auto, and .357 Mag. Anyone have experience with this stuff?

remington UMC !

Shot thousands of .223 over the last 20 - 25 years - consistent (low power though) accuracy in everything I shot it through. Have a couple of bench rest guns that result in continual one sixteenth 3 round groups with it . I have miked it and found the overall lengths and weights {digital powder scale} to be very consistant. The winchester budget measures like sh!t {Super X too} and shoots the same in comparison. Only had one case split at the shoulder in all those years. Highly recommended ! Buy it now - I hear the price is goin way up -

I have zero qualms with the stuff, the 55Gr FMJ shoots under an Inch in my 700P (223) where as the whinny white box is above 3 inches

I like it for 45acp. I have several 1000's of rounds of 230rn down the barrels of my 1911's.....never a problem. As a matter of fact I prefer the UMC brass over Fed or Win when it comes to reloading. It's something to consider if you decide to reload later on.

Don't go stupid and buy 2000 rounds of the stuff off the start. Buy a couple hunderd rounds just to make sure that it works well with your pistol.

I agree with NINE. I have found the 9mm works great but I did notice my pistol was a little dirtier after using it compared to other brands. Not a big deal though...I clean 'em after using them anyways.

The UMC stuff is what I use for training and competition ammo when I can't get ahold of Kurt. The stuff is good. It also (supposedly) meets US DOD Ammo requirements in the respective surplus calibres.

It works fine out of my 9mm sig but I have seen some people have feeding issues out of it with new M&Ps.

Looking at the rounds it looks like they are seated a bit lower then Winchestor or Federal rounds. It seems to me that UMC is a little under powered compared to other brands, mind you this is just my impression as I have not cronoed any to test this. I buy the stuff in the big 250rd "value pack" and it does what I need it to do, make holes in paper more or less where I want them.

I think the problems that I have seen can be attributed to new guns that really haven't been broken in, ammo that may have a little less power and bullets that are seated lower then standard.

The 12 Gauge 3 inch Magnums are slow compared to most modern steel loads. I'd have to go check out my stash and compare it to the Kent, Winchester and Federal loads I have. If you are shooting high speed steel for waterfowl you'll have to adjust your lead.

I've had no problems with it in .308 or .303, and it's good practice ammo.

The prices have gone way up on it though, what used to be a $15 box can be as much as $25 now.

I used to shoot it in My Walther P-38 and never had a bit of trouble,I do think it was a little dirtier then some but that's just My opinion,I do think it is good Ammunition.
