I'm a fan of aperture and ghost-ring sights on levers and muzzleloaders, and have a couple of .22's set up that way as well. I'm now considering mounting one on a nice old Interarms MarkX Mauser in .458WinMag. My "go-to" plan was to use a Lyman 57 rear aperture sight, but I'm not in love with the idea of trimming the stock to make room for it. I know about other types of aperture sights that mount completely on top of the action, but haven't got a lot of experience with them. Stuff like Skinners or XS or...? If I go that way I will lose the option of having bases on the receiver for a scope in QD rings. The Lyman just seems right for this gun; not sure which way I want to go.

Anybody have any ideas or experience with this type of set-up? I'd love to hear any and all advice...may or may not actually heed the advice, but...:)

Just my personal experience, but I absolutely hate having peep sights mounted on the side of the receiver bridge. I always seem to smash my knuckles on them doing rapid fire drills.

I would suggest getting Talley QD bases, then install one of the little peep sights they offer that fit the bases. Unscrew the peep and tuck it away somewhere safe when you want to use the scope.

XS sights makes back up peeps that clamp onto a weaver base. easy to take off and install a scope with QD rings. I use the" Low weaver back" up on 2 of my rifles. Love them and tough as hell

Thanks, guys. Talleys sound good...the XS sounds even better! I have several other guns with Weaver bases, so the XS could serve as a back-up on any of them. Do we have a Canadian retailer for these things?
