Neat picture. From the bit of reading I've come across on the subject, back then "hunts" like that were mainly animal drives. The white hunter would be on horse or elephant back and slightly ahead of the large group of soldiers or locals known as "beaters". The beaters would fan out in an advancing line a few yards from each other. They would move forward through the bush, beating at the undergrowth with stickes etc and generally creating the most racket possible. The tiger, lion or whatever else would be flushed out and the white hunter would pursue and shoot them. The longer the line of beaters, the less likely for the animal to flush out to the flanks. It wasn't unheard of though for the tiger to turn and attack the white hunter or the beaters though.
