I am looking at getting my 12 year old daughter into hunting. I need to find out if there is a way that she get can a hunting licence and firearm licence so she can hunt with her own firearm as well as myself with my own firearm. Most of what I have read is that the apprentice can only share a firearm with the mentor. Does anyone know if what I am looking for is possible and if so what courses or licences does my daughter need to get. Thanks for in advance.

She will need to take the Hunter Safety Course as well as the Firearms Safty Course to get a Hunter Apprentice Card, this will allow her to hunt with a mentor 18 years or older . There are some other restrictions as well .Check out the MNR website for all the details.

You can apply for a minors license for your daughter. She can have her own firearm while hunting with you under the apprentice program but the apprentice rules apply, she must be with you (beside you). You have to send a hard copy form to the CFO of the province to apply. I did this for my son when he was 13. It is a pain but doable. Additional info below. Good luck.

Canadian Firearms Safety Course

-Students aged 12-17 may receive a Minor’s License if applicable.

-A Minors’ License will enable young people to borrow a non-restricted rifle or shotgun for approved purposes such as hunting or target shooting. Generally, the minimum age for a Minor’s License is 12 years. Applicants must have taken the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and passed the test.

-Once a person turns 18, they are no longer eligible for a minor’s license. Instead, they must apply for a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) and pay the applicable fee.

-In order to obtain a Minor’s License Application, the student’s guardian must call 1-800-731-4000 (then press 1-1-7503) and request hard copy/fax of a Minor’s License Application.

I thought you couldn't get. Minors until 15? My bro went through it with me a few years back and could hunt with his own gun until 15 when he could get A minors pal at 15. Before that the kids have to hint under direct superviosion and the mentor cannot use a gun. The kids bag limit counts towards mentors limit unless hunting waterfowl. The Kid has to have his or her own duck stamp.

Your daughter cannot be out with her own firearm with a Hunter Apprentice card. You must share 1 firearm with her, and she must be within arms reach of the licenced hunter (most likely you) at all times, when she has the firearm. Any game she takes while out with you comes off your licence, with the exception of migratory birds; the Feds require she actually have her own waterfowl licence for some reason.

And, she must have completed and passed both the firearms safety course and the hunter Ed. Course.

When she is 15, she can obtain her full hunting licence. At that time, if she has obtained her Minor's Permit for firearms, she will then be able to legally borrow a non-restricted firearm to hunt with and do so without your immediate supervision. Without that permit, she cannot borrow a firearm.

ETA: Forgot to mention that to obtain the firearms minor's permit, you will need to call CFC directly to request the application as they do not make it available otherwise...and again, she has to have taken the firearms course first, and passed both exams.

This is the exact route I took with my nephew.
