I have a friend that said I can come out and pick up a gun she has in the closet. Information she gave me was Mossberg 144 LS.
She sent me pictures and it has the peep sight on it 7 shot clip and rest pod on the forearm of the stock from what she said was that her late husband was given the gun when he was about 8-10yrs old but said he never shot it.
I'd like to pay her for it but not finding much information on present value

She sent me pictures on FB messenger and everything is there and trying to zoom in on pictures I'm not finding any defects but I'll find out tomorrow when I go pick it up. I haven't shot anything with a peep sight since I was a kid and that was a long long time ago.

250 bucks seems fair to me.

Gotta agree with trebor. That would be a fair price to give her.

If someone was a Mossberg collector.
Like others have said it could be worth more.

I'd run a patch through it, check for rust etc, pull the bolt, make sure the firing pin moves freely and go have some fun.

It's a bit on the heavy side @ 8lbs, but you will be amazed how well she will group with a 26" barrel. Gotta love a rifle with a Peep.

Made between 1954-1960.

If you can pick up a VG or better, complete 144LS for $250, pick it up without haggling. The rear sight is worth $75+ and the magazine is appx the same.

These rifles shoot every bit as well as any Cooey.

The OP is trying to be FAIR with a friend. We've all been there. You don't grind a friend out of a few bucks, especially if their financial situation is tight, which was my impression of the post.

Paying parts prices for that rifle, if it is in VG+ condition?????

I would be inclined to go with bearhunter.
Minty - $400

VG-Exc - $350

G-VG - $200-$275

Less - $75 -$150

I find minty very subjective and rare. Hand stop, sights, sling swivels, condition of bluing/stock etc. However between friends and having a good examination the $250 may be more in line.

If the gun is nice and complete, it is a $450.00 gun. If average than around $300.00 - $325.00. The price between the OP and the owner is another matter and up to the OP to determine what he feels is fair.

Thanks Guys. I talked with her and she said she's happy with $200. in fact very pleased with it. She said it's just been in the closet for years and her late husband never ever shot it so I'm looking forward to picking it up. I've read that this is a decent gun for accuracy and as mentioned a heavy one. I'll let you know

Good on you. You're both happy and you're getting a very decent rifle on top of it.

By the way, they love standard velocity ammo.

Collectors are looking at condition along with all the original accessories on that Mossberg.

For example: original peeps front and rear, original hand stop, original sling swivels, all original and unadulterated screws.

If the bore is good then it should be a shooter. I have one in decent shape and all original that does well with std vel ammo as noted above. Just go get some CCI std vel to test in it without going expensive right off the bat.

The biggest issue with those Mossies with the plastic insert finger grooves in the pistol grip is that the darn things will shrink over time in some cases resulting in them being bowed the point where only a portion of the trigger is showing below it or worse it cracks under the tension. Aside from this issue those Mossbergs are decent 22 rifles.

Have fun with it.

I brought it home and stripped it down for a good cleaning with my G96 Gun Treatment and 000 steel wool.I could feel something on the barrel it just needed a good cleaning.Ran a swab down the barrel and she's beautiful. She told me the gun had never been fired and I have no way to say it has or hasn't but the barrel rifling is perfect and the only mark on the top of the clip is where the bolt slides across it. No sign of any ammo loaded. It cleaned of beautifully but trying to adjust to those peep sights is challenging. Missing the rear swivel portion for the sling and the green plug marker for the safety. I have no way to post pictures.

sounds like it might be worth more than $200 but since you made the deal on faith without a through inspection id say its fair.
now if you flip in it 2 weeks for +$400 i might think less of you but if its to add to your collection and keep it then I think everybody won.

These are not too sought after 200$ used is a lucky price

What decade are you living in? They haven't been that price for ages unless all beat to hell or incomplete or the person doesn't know values. And yes, I have had and still have several Mossbergs and know what they go for.

I see that poster is already banned!

I have a Mossberg 144 LSB, the heaviest of the 144 series of rifles.
While I don't believe I would take it to a really serious competition,
it is plenty accurate, and made the 50M challenge on here.
I am thinking a pristine 144 LS is worth around $400.00 if complete.
Dave.

Most people have never seen or would know what to look for, when perusing a Mossberb 144 LS platform rifle. As such they've seen rifles that were cut down, abused etc.

Eagleye, yes there are and were more accurate rifles out there, but a lot of people got into this type of rimfire match shooting with these rifles, because they were consistently accurate with standard velocity ammo and relatively cheap.

'Approximate value of Mossberg' hmmm... latest figures I could find O.F. Mossberg & Sons had sales in 2012 of $185M USD; they are privately held so don't publish annual reports and such. The industry as a whole has seen very large increases in demand for everything in the intervening time, so doubtless its hypothetical valuation is higher now.
