Hey Guys,

I need to put together an AR-10 CAD model for a new project I'm working on (Think Non-restricted .308). AR-10 lowers are easy to find models and drawings for but I'm not having much luck finding anything else. I have found an upper model but I don't know how accurate it is.

Does anyone here have a full AR-10 CAD model or set of schematics/blueprints? Specifically I need the barrel, barrel nut, barrel extension, bolt carrier, bolt head and if I could find parts for a piston driven upper that would be a massive bonus but I imagine they are hard to come by.

How many of the parts are interchangeable between the AR-10 and AR-15?

Furthermore, if anyone has old parts lying around that they could lend me I could model them and then mail them back to you. I've done that with some other members here who I won't name for privacy sake but it has worked well.

Anyway, let me know!

Cheers,

Here's an example of an MP5 lower I modeled last winter. This was one of the parts loaned to me by another board member.

I wish you all the best on this project, but if you are after a NR classification, be aware that the AR-10 is restricted by name/type/variant. You should remove any reference to AR-10, and be wary of the fact that the RCMP has a very loosey-goosey interpretation of what they consider a "variant". e.g. https://nfa.ca/news/rcmp-reclassifying-firearms-and-rifle-stocks-run-end-long-gun-registration
These bureaucratic tyrants salivate at keeping arms out of reach of the populace that they are sworn to protect and serve, and will even use mere external aesthetic similarity as grounds for doing so.

What I'm planning shouldn't require approval or an FRT and will not fit on an AR lower in any way. I just need a full model as a starting point.

If it's a new firearm it will need an FRT. If your copying an existing non restricted you should look into patent violations.
From the sounds of the parts you want to copy you will have a restricted AR-10 variant.
Good luck

Check arfcom. They have a sticky that details exactly which parts are the same between an Ar10 and an AR15.

I know the Ar10 rifle buffer is ~.74" shorter than the ar15 buffer, but the A2 buffer tube (receiver extension) is the same size.

The lower parts kit is the same except for the take down pins, and the bolt stop IIRC.

cncguns forum has a dpms-style .308 upper cad file but I think it's not complete.

Have you considered askig Wolverine Supplies? I keep seeing AR-10 parts on their website.

I'm interested in seeing what you're working on. I would have assumed a conversion kit for AR-10, but you said it wouldn't fit. Now I'm curious.

Those are just .308 AR15 there's a difference I think. The AR 15 is restricted by name and the AR 10 isn't.

There's no mention of the ar10 and its the parent design of the ar15 so it technically isn't a variant of the ar 15 then.

If it's 308win or 7.62x51 it's not AR-15 parts. The action is longer for the 308.

Yes your right but what you see for sale listed as AR10 are up scaled AR15 and not true AR10. AR 15 are down scaled and modified AR10 so an up scaled ar 15 is not an ar10. Am I making sence lol?

Yes and no.

The original ~60's AR10s are a completely different animal than Armalite's current AR10s. Since the current AR10s are based off of the AR15 design, they count as a variant of an AR15.

However, since Armalite owns the rights to the AR10 name, they can call it an AR10 even if it's not the same as the O.G. AR10s

From what I understand, most of the original AR10s are prohibited due to being F/A (or C/A?) although supposedly a very small number exist that would be Non-res as they were made semi from the factory.

So now comes my silly theoretical question; In the past I have made (from blocks of aluminum) my own AR15 and (new-school) AR10, and obviously registered them. So, if I make an old-school AR10 to the original specs........would it be non-restricted? Or are we fairly sure that it would get classified as a variant even though it's obviously not?

Wally and whoever else is thinking of this
You may want to talk to the RCMP firearms lab before you put a bunch of work into this project.
If they give you the thumbs up to go ahead and that it will be non restricted and you can manufacture them you'll be rich.
Make it take Magpul mags though.

Are you basing it on an original AI semi only ar10? Are you making a lower to fit the original uppers? Those are NR because they predate the ar15

Well, anything I manufacture would be for myself and not for profit, so I don't see getting rich. Not only that, being that if it was done for profit, it would be a limited run and I doubt it would end up being any cheaper than any other .308 black rifle available today.

I really don't need any legal advice, especially since you guys are just speculating about what I'm doing! What I do need is a CAD model or parts I can model.

OK, Thanks. arfcom? as in ar15.com?

I've been on the cncguns site before and all they have is an AR-10 lower. I've also checked biggerhammer, grabcad, 3dcontentcentral and done a pile of google searching but I haven't come up with much.

Uh oh. Name in pink :(

Well, if you end up reading this, the 3d model for the dpms style upper is not on the downloads page of cnc guns. You have to look through the forum, someone made it and posted a link so people could download it.

Or message me (when you get off time-out), I may have it saved somewhere.

Why'd wally get pinked?

If I wanted to create a custom (modern armalite) AR10 lower I would buy one of these 80% blanks.
http://genesiscnc.com/product/80-billet-ar-10-lower-receiver-blank/

The DPMS pattern blanks are VERY common.

If a vintage AR10 lower is to be fabricated then it is just a matter of finding drawings.

"...the AR-10 is restricted by name/type/variant..." A real AR-10 is prohibited by name. The current batch are not real AR-10's.
"...Am I making sence..." Sense, maybe, but not sence. Different thing. Just like an AR-10 and an AR-15.

The complexity of the topic eludes me. But reading the what's new, this tread pops up.

Can they the rcmp, be given a AR 10, and simply ask them what features need to "go away " for it to be considered "something else". Because it's not the grip, the trigger pack, the safety, lots of guns share those features.

Better yet just give them RandD money. Let's get them working for us. I got 50$ that's says they already have layouts in mind they really don't want to see because they are viable solutions.

They won't tell you what needs to go away. When we did our AR 10 lowers they said you show us the finished product and we'll tell you if it's ok or not. They told us that since we were making a known design that we could just submit pictures, but if it was a new design that it may have to actually be sent to them, and that it would be bye-bye for a minimum of a year. That was 4 or 5 years ago, so it may have changed. With the LGR gone that also adds a different twist, but it's a safe bet that they won't take your word for it that it's non restricted, at least not until they tell you it is
