I searched persistently for this on the web and i found out that 542's barrel profile is similar to FAL (needs confirmation).

FAL has metric threading 9/16-24 LH, but it can be made RH by a gunsmith from a get go. Then it needs an adapter from 9/16-24 to 5/8-24.

Am I correct?

I am just asking to determine the scope of work before contracting the gunsmith for quote.

If you are getting a gunsmith to make your threads RH then have him thread 5/8-24 instead of 9/16. He will have to cut and rethread the barrel anyway, then you have a standard threaded barrel for a muzzle brake.

Never worked on a FAL but if I was to take a barrel and change threads I would cut the current thread tenon, turn to proper size and thread the barrel to whatever size needed.

Thank you for your reply.

Flash hider is pinned on FAMAE SG 542, so there is no factory threading. barrel is 14.6 mm in diameter increasing to 15 mm where flash hider is. 5/8 is 15.875 mm and 9/16 is 14.2875 mm.

Looks like I will have to drive the upper to a gunsmith and let him evaluate the barrel profile. I would be glad to get 5/8-24 right away and don't pay $50 for adapter.
