AR-15 .22 Conversion Question

OK, so I did some more research and found out that the best rate of twist is a 1/16. Does anybody know where I can get an AR-15 1/16 barrel? Or an upper assy complete with a 1/16 twist?

Essentially if you want the "best" accuracy for a 22 conversion AR then you need to look at purchasing a dedicated .22 Upper Half Complete. We used to bring in the Tactical Solutions .22 Uppers. These had a purpose built, quality barrel that was designed to use with their .22 BCG and the whole package dropped onto your AR lower half... just insert .22 mag that was included.

Problem was that they kept increasing the cost pricing and it got to the point where it was too expensive and we stopped importing them.

Most people who shoot .22lr in the AR are just plinking and not trying to set accruacy records... cost was a factor so we started handling the conversion kits to allow users to utilize their existing uppers.

The kits will work fine in the slower barrel twists... they just won't be as accurate (groups won't be as good) but they are still quite acceptable and a lot of fun to shoot. I've used the CMMG kits with my 1/7 LMT and it was okay. A 1/9 would be better and that's probably one of the most common twist rates out there right now.

Have you tried a .22 kit with a 1/7 or 1/9 barrel?

Thanks Mark!
Im in the same boat actually, and was wondering who does sell the complete .22lr upper. I want to have a short 14.5-16" .22lr upper, and a 20" 1/9 twist upper in .223. That way I should be able to change the uppers, depending on my mood. Am I correct?

i was very dissappointed with the "thing" that colt was inserting with their rifles(ar15) s years ago- esnentally it was a chamber adaptor to allow 22 lr to fire in the 223 - accuracy was horrible , and it misfed most/all of the time- i didn;t know whether to blame the magazines or the adaptor- far better off getting a 10/22 (and cheaper) and doing the "heavy duty" thing to that than using that thing( properly, i guess it was a bolt carrier group) -there were two deals available at the time, either the 22 version, or a"tactical package" in 223 - scope, bayonet(m9 phobos) 2-20 rd mags, and a sling- i traded for the other when i saw such a pos it was- think it was called an achiesson adaptor at the time- and it's still a RESTRICTED - no gophering , squirreling, or rabbits-

Yes, you're correct, but your mileage will vary. There's a great deal of inconsistency in precision when converting AR15s to .22LR shooters. Sometimes it's the ammo, sometimes it's the gun.

Thanks Mark!

The only one making a short dedicated 22lr upper (that I can think of off the top) is Spike's Tactcial... but it's pretty much impossible now to get an Export Permit from US State Department for barrel lengths under 16" and State Department has been unwilling to approve export permits for Spike's stuff the past year.

The Tactical Solutions uppers are dedicated uppers (can't shoot anything except .22lr) as the barrel is designed just to work with their bolt carrier group and only with .22lr.

The TS upper half was @ $850 when we last carried them... would be @ $925 to $1,000 now based on the last costing they sent us.

Honestly... save yourself $600.00 plus dollars and get the CMMG .22 conversion kit ($334.95). It's as easy to swap the BCG as it is to change the upper... the kit will work very nicely with a 20" 1:9 upper... and you'll have an extra $600 to $700 dollars left in your pocket.

If you really find that you aren't happy with the accuracy you're getting then you can always sell the .22 kit (always a market for those) and find yourself a dedicated upper half... or maybe you'll eventually find a barreled upper with a 1:12 or higher twist rate and then make that a dedicated .22 upper half.

Just my 2 cents worth :)

The Black Dog Machine magazines work in all Ciener style conversion kits, CMMG kits, Spike's kits and the new SIG 522 Rifles. Until recently the CMMG kits were being shipped with the Black Dog Machine magazines but then CMMG decide to put out a magazine with their own name on it and use those with their kits (instead of using the Black Dog Machine mags). They look almost identical.

We carry the Black Dog Machine magazines... we have a new shipment of the Black Dog Machine AR-22 black magazines on the way... we also have some of their new AR-22 Drum Magazines coming too. All off these work great with the CMMG conversion kit.
