Hello,

Looking for advice or pointers to good information on building a .22lr upper.

A little background info: I'd like to build an AR-15 from scratch as a learning experience. I realize buying a fully built AR-15 is cheaper (and I already have one of those), this is completely being done for the experience - both learning and enjoyment. Since I already have a 5.56 AR, part of the "job" of this new AR will be for alternate calibers.

I've done some searching on this forum for information on building an AR, and I've found lot of good information, both on here and links to other good information, which I'm reading through. Thanks to all who've posted great information on here in the past.

One piece that I don't see much information on though (possibly I'm missing something with my searching) is building a dedicated .22lr upper. Tips, tricks, gotchas, and even recommendations on where to buy parts in Canada. I've searched through some of the site sponsors, but in Canada when it comes to .22lr uppers, it seems that mostly what's for sale is fully completed uppers or just bolt carrier conversions, and I'm not having much luck finding the parts separately. e.g. dedicated .22lr barrel and chamber, 1:16 twist rather than one of the standard 5.56 / .223 twists, etc.

Thanks for any help.

I fully appreciate the interest in wanting to build an AR or part of one for the joy of learning but I am not sure of the need to make a dedicated 22 upper. When I did my research I read about twist ratios and barrel lengths etc. which would be optimal for 22s but I didn't see the sense in buying anything extra when all you really need is a conversion kit which takes less than a minute to swap out. In the end, I just bought a conversion kit and have had no problems with it in either a 10.5" or a 14.5" barrel other than it gets dirty pretty fast and you can sure go thru a lot of ammo fast!. Save your money to buy more ammo or a different uppers! Just my 2 cents.
