Today I decided to see if I could have fun swapping between cartridges in my AR-15 (via Spikes .22lr kit) and not have to change anything with regards to Point of Aim and Point of Impact. Afterall it's not cool if you need to make adjustments in order to hit what you are aiming at with each swap, am I right?
SUCCESS!
I'm happy to report that using the small aperture for .22lr(40gr) ammunition and the large aperture for .223Rem(62gr) ammo resulted in the same POA/POI at distances tested (25m & 50m).
The gun (10.3" N8CQB barrel - 1:7twist):
The aperture (Troy BUIS) used for .223Rem at both 25m & 50m:
The aperture (Troy BUIS) used for .22lr at both 25m & 50m:
.223Rem targets
*sparingly on the .223 ammunition as you can see:
50m - 5shot group
25m - 3shot group
.22lr targets:
50m - 15shot group
25m - 25shot group
There you have it!
Again, the only thing changed between cartridges was the aperture, that's all.
*Using the large aperture with .22lr drops the POI.
So, .22lr conversion kits for the AR-15 in my opinion are well worth it, very fun and good practice at short distances
