Now that I have finished my hunting 30 Herrett caliber AR I was wondering who else has a self made or purchased black rifle in another caliber other then 5.56/223. 6.8 is a great round does anybody shoot it?

This AR 15 caliber is superior to a 30-30 and slightly slower then a NATO 7.62 rounds performance all in a regular sized black rifle.

The 25-45 looks neat, but if you e got a .223 rifle as well you need some really strict discipline to keep the 2 rounds separate. A little too similar looking to the .223 for my liking, but we'll see how people like it.

I own AR's in 223/5.56, 300 Blackout, 9mm, and have a 6.8 SPC barrel that I swap in once in a while. I've also owned a couple AR-10's in 308/7.62x51. I love them all but the ones I like best are my 223, the 300BLK, and the 9mm.

I only run 5.56/.223 AR's and that is solely because they are restricted. if I could hunt with them I'd be all over a .243 & .308 model. Until then I use my NR black rifles in other calibers for an occasional hunt.

The AR 10 can be a heavy beast to carry around while hunting. I guess once situated in a stand or blind it wouldn't matter but, I like the single point sling and a light AR 15 myself.

I have a DD in 5.56mm, a DD in 6.8mm SPC, and an Armalite AR-10 in 7.62mm. I love all three, but given the restricted nature of ARs, the 6.8mm is a bit of a waste of money. It of course can only be used to punch paper, and taking that into account, there isn't anything a 6.8 could do that a newer 77 grain 5.56mm couldn't, and for less money (and easier to find ammo) With that said, I still love it and is a great conversation piece at that range. Now if it could be used for hunting, a 6.8mm would be fantastic for short to medium range.

There isn't anything that should be stopping you from using it for hunting. The dollar difference is a bit of concern however the outfitters in the U.S. are generally a cheaper option then in Canada.

I have done lots of alternate calibers but the reality is the novelty usually wears off due to the very limited uses or AR platform since its restricted

IMO , lots of guys go on about the advantages ( stopping power, external ballistics ) of some of these oddball calibers , but since most of us don't shoot at ranges over 300m on a regular basis at anything other than paper and steel it becomes less relevant

A good example is that as awesome as the external ballistics are for my 6.5 Grendel , I see no advantage at the 300 yrds I typically shoot at compared to 5.56 loaded with 69gr and 77Gr SMK and Amaxes

The only reason I have a 6.8 SPC was I had a barrel sitting in my tool box for 8 years and decided instead of gathering dust I should put it together !

Only reason I have 7.62X39 is I stocked up years ago on ammo when I shot my SKS . I just had crates of ammo begging to be fired so I "had to" bet a 7.62x39 upper

The non standard calibers I shoot the most is actually 9mm ( since I can chug out a lifetime supply with my Dillon 1050 that is permanently set up to load 9Major ) during the winter months at indoor ranges

Indoor range I go to does not allow 5.56 so 9mm seemed like a good choice

My most completely impractical chambering I have is 458 Socom . Can't hunt with it, just shoot paper. The reason I picked one up was I can shoot it at the indoor range .

Does make me smile every time I pull the trigger though !

I have a 308 AR but the reality is I have waaaayyy more fun taking my precision bolt 308 shooting steel at 500+ yards out in the bush

Cost is also a factor. I would rather shoot more rounds downrange than be crawling around the grass looking for my Grendel / Socom / SPC / 300Blk brass

If I were to do it all a gain , I would still have my oddballs , but if I were limited to one caliber , it would be 5.56
