so i got my new norc ar15 today and when i opened it up the buffer came flying out. upon further investigation i found the buffer retainer lying in the trigger group, it appears that the previous owner installed a single point sling attachment which prevents the buffer tube from holding the retainer down and allows the buffer to fly out when i open it up... what can i do about this? im assuming this isnt suppose to happen

Loosen up the buffer tube and turn it in one or more rotations until the lip at the front of the tube will hold the retainer pin. Then tighten everything. Every sling attachment is designed to work just fine; the previous owner must have just mis installed.

becareful with the castle nut, if the previous owner used locktite on it you will probably strip the threads on removal... dont ask how I know this ;)

Also the cheaper wrenches can round off or chew up the castle nuts.

turns out he only finger tightened it before shipping it and i managed to find the spring for the buffer retainer... anyone in the GTA have a carbine wrench i can borrow :D

You can use a brass, delryn, or aluminum punch and small hammer on the castle nut. You don't really need a wrench.
