From a purely visual stand point do you prefer to see an AR 15 with or without a carry handle?

It still looks wrong to me without one.

If it's going to have a carry handle, I prefer the A1 uppers for looks and function.

I think a separate carry handle is redundant these days of such variety of sighting systems and iron sights.

A stock AR looks way better with the carry handle, but you are right when you say that having the detachable handle gives you the best of both worlds....

depends if there's a flip up front sight as well- if it's just your standard fixed sight, then the standard a1-a2 sights should bring up the rear

I think the carry hanlde is ugly and useless. You should never be carrying your rifle like that anyways... With a flat top you have so many more options for optics and you stay closer to the bore. To me the carry handle is an old relic from the m16's used in Vietnam, For versistility, go for flat top. My .02

All my uppers are flat top but I keep the carry handle on one of them, I like the look of it but I agree with you about actually carrying it that way, the barrel is a lot heavier than the carbine stock so carrying it with the handle is pretty uncomfortable due to the lack of balance.

I have always preferred the stock look with carry handle myself...

I am not arguing against the usefulness of a flat top regarding optics. From a purely visual stand point was my question.

Same could be said about a telescoping stock on full length rifle. It has it's advantages but just doesn't look right from a purely visual stand point. However, that is another topic.

I am just glad these rifles aren't prohibited.

I think I prefer the flattops, alot of options for optics that are better than the sights on the carry handle. I think the carry handle has a nice classic M-16 look but how many people actually use it as a handle. I love the visual of a flattop with great optics and gear, looks like you mean business. The carry handle seems to make the gun seem toyish!

For me I have a flattop Sabre Defence with a detachable carry handle. It sits in my gun room and the rifle is equiped with BUIS and either an EoTech or ACOG, depending on my needs.

I have never tried my handle on my AR, I think it will never be mounted because I love the current setup.

If I had two AR's, then I'd maybe think about getting the second with a carry handle just for the historical perspective!

For me, I like the modernized flattop AR's.

I like the carry handle. In "88 when the C-7 began to be issued to the CF in a big way I got to replace my FN with it. I was excited until I carried it. The carry handle at-point-of-balance was not balanced at all! The damn rifle was front heavy and made carrying it by that handle tiring.
I realized the C-7 was not the light M-16A1. The barrel was thicker and heavier; just what a bench-rest shooter needs. Not the infantry though.
