what would i need to make a veitnam era clone with an ar 15? always liked the look of those. how could i get it almost perfect (identicle exept for the fun switch)? i have a A2 stag lower to use.

that all depends on WHICH version you want to do- the early ones had no forward assist and the three pronged flashider which got caught on everything- rumors had it there was one that had a wirecutter in the flashider, but i never saw one-if you want to do a late version, all you need is the triangular handguard, the old style buttstock, old style aft sight, an early a2 upper( which is easier to find) and you can use the rest of the 'standard" ar 15 stuff- i would try to use a modern twist barrel, however, as some of the old ones have a 1/12 and 1/14 twist- almost useless in my opinion- you can eliminate some of the grief by making a car/xm version as those use the handguards which are still in production today, but finding an upper WITHOUT the forward assist and the bump may be next to impossible

Google

Wikipedia, AR15 Variants

It has a 15 page list of the different AR15/M16 's ever made.

Also check out AR15.com & the Retro section, lots of pics & info.

You will have a hard time getting anyone down South to ship parts up to here.

The one in fourteen twist barrels are the best varmit killers ever. (In the old non restricted days mind you) I could sell you a set of rectangular handguards for 25 bucks.(pm me if you want them)

they may have worked well on varmints ,but in "our" application they were the worst pos ever- and only a 400 effective- that's a heck of a comedown from the m14- which was the best rifle ever- i refused to get one until 1990, when somebody showed me what the a2.1/7 twist with the heavier pills could do- even then, i still prefer the m14, and that was only b/c we envisioned the russians coming to town

the rectangular guards normally fit with the greade launcher version=m16/203 along with a fancy rear sight that attaches to the handguard anda foresight that attaches behind the ordinary front sight- google m16/203 grenade launcher for pics

First you need to decide which version you want to emulate. The AR15 went through most of its development in Vietnam and the number of variants fielded was in the double digits.

Secondly, you should know that you have already handicapped yourself with the lower you have. Rifles made 1959-1975 (Vietnamish era) were built on first, second and third pattern lowers. Your lower is a fourth pattern, not introduced until 1983. My own M16 clone, intended to be a 1964 m604, is quite good except it sits on a fourth pattern lower, which irritates me a bit everytime I look at it.

The easiest thing to track down would be a Colt SP1, of course it's not completely accurate, but close enough for most folks. Or you could just keep your eyes peeled for a better clone. I have a PWA A1 style lower that came complete with GI contract 1/12 upper receiver. I had to track down a couple of minor parts like a proper slip ring, ejection port cover, triangular handguards, teardrop forward assist to make it a more accurate clone, but it's about as close as you can get to an M16A1.

Or you could just buy a Norinco CQ311 and replace the furniture with milsurp items.

i would like to have the 203 but i looked at the prices and said out loud F**k that.

looking at somthing like this, would dlask make a custom upper?

Heres a few pics of my clones, not exactly correct due to the US regs on importing parts.
I am not a Colt expert, some info may be wrong!

Colt AR-15 ( this one is the civilian model SP1)
Colt Model # 602 (601's had 1:14" twist)
Prior to 1965

No : Forward Assist nor Case Deflector
Slab Side Lower (no re-enforcing ribs by mag catch)
Butt stock with no cleaning kit trap door & sling swivel on a stud.
3 Prong Flash Hider

sp1gear.jpg

XM16E1 (M16A1)
Colt Model # 603
1965 ish

Forward Assist but no case deflector
A1 Bird Cage Flash Hider, fluted 360`
(Looks similar to an A2 Hider but, A2's have a solid bottom to prevent dust blow up)
This one should also have the striaght Delta Ring, I have one just waiting for tools to get here to change it.
Lower should only have the top horizontal re-enforcing rib, not the vertical one & the small dia. horizontal one by the mag catch.
Also should not have the "FIRE" "SAFE" stamped on the side.
(I used a Bushmaster lower as that's what I had)
Also no cleaning kit trap door in butt & should have sling swivel on a stud.

I am now building 2 early Carbines

I haven't decided on which one of these I will build.
I now have all the parts just need time to put together.

I am prob going to build this one useing a SP1 lower/upper.

CAR-15 SMG
Colt Model # XM607

10" barrel
3.5" solid moderator (flash hider)
No bayonet lug
Short Triangle Handgaurds
No Forward Assist nor case deflector
Slab Side lower
telescopic 7" butt stock

No pics yet, similar to the pics below.

or may built this

CAR - 15 SMG
Colt Model # 607A

10" barrel
3.5" moderator
no bayonet lug
Short Triangle Handgaurds
Forward Assist but no case deflector
7" telescopic butt stock
In this pic you can see the correct re-enforcing rib on the lower.
(You can modify a newer lower by grinding off the other 2 ribs & re-finishing the lower)

Also going to build one of these for my kid.
I have the parts but no time to put together.

It should look like this.

XM177
Colt Model 610

10" barrel
5" slotted moderator with Grenade launcher Ring
No bayonet lug
Short ribbed round handgaurds
No forward assist nor case deflector
2 position aluminum telescopic butt stock

(may build a XM177E1 - Colt Model 609, same specs, but has a case deflector)

I have also noticed that not all early M16s had the Tear Drop Forward Assists. I have seen some original pics with them having the Round Forward Assist button.

Also the Vietnam era M16s should all have the Triangle Charge Handle.

I'll post pics as soon as I can re-weld my de-milled ones.

Where did you get the XM607 stock? Is it the real macoy or an "my65pan" creation?
