Do you have a source for 5.45x39 surplus? There doesn't seem to be that much around. .223 is readily available and not ridiculous in price. I don't see the benefit, unless you have a warehouse full of 5.45.

Since the US just banned steelcore surplus 5.45x39 because there are now pistols that fire it available there (it's now considered AP handgun ammo),it's possible we may start getting some surp 5.45. Not a bad thing for us but sucks the big one for the boys down south!

If it starts coming in in larger quanties I'm in for a gun in that caliber.

Where are you finding surplus ammo? NRCan has virtually banned importing most of it due to the corrosive primers. No AP at all.
So has the American ATF. No ammo anywhere.

If you take an AR and put an 18inch barrel on it and convert it to the surplus ammo, would it be a NR rifle after? I'm cerious and a noob to this

It would be super prohibited then....level 6 prohib I believe....as high as it can get, same for any gun that can shoot into outer space.
Or maybe because the AR is restricted by name, it will always be restricted no matter what you do to it.
18" barrel or less on a semi auto center fire rifle is also restricted.
