Various parts on their way to put together an AR-15, I had it in my mind that I wanted a front sight base rather than a low profile gas block. Problem is I have a new heavy profile barrel coming and no trust in any of my local gunsmiths. Completely skipped my mind that these are typically taper pinned together.

Any options available for a clamp on front sight base?

I've used the Arma-lite A2 style clamp on, and the Vltor clamp-on type. Both are excellent and I doubt you'd be able to torque them around. I think PRI (another great manufacturer, but no experience) said their clamp on sight can withstand over 150 foot pounds of torque when properly tightened.... So realistically they're pretty safe!

If you want a taper pinned on sight base, Casey at Tactical Ordinance (a sponsor here) does great work, and would be worth sending your barrel and sight out for.... He's out of Ontario.

I like the PRI and the Vltor, but both are pretty expensive

Having said that, I have a YHM and quite frankly you get what you pay for. The fit and finish is nowhere near as nice as the PRI or Vltor

If you doubt how hard the Vltor , google the Vltor and Milspec Monkey's torque test

They torqued the gas block / sight to over 100ft lbs and managed to destroy the upper and the index pin of the barrel before they stopped !

Arms also makes one but I have not tried it yet

I think for what you will end up spending for a PRI / Vltor ( well over $270 ) you may want to source a barrel that already has A2 sight pinned on there

Thanks for the info everybody!

PRI, YHM, Vltor are all folding sights. Would be convenient but i'm making an effort to build this thing as rugged as possible. Not that we're allowed to use the AR as a "truck gun" but that's basically the idea behind every component.

I've seen pics of the Armalite clamp on sight base and it's exactly what I want! Read in a couple places they haven't been produced in a few years and are difficult to come by.

There's also one made by DEZ tactical in USA. Haven't come across any canadian distributors for them and a little nervous about trying to order that over the border myself. Irun maybe? Will have to check.

Definitely interested in having a standard A2 fsb pinned on if I can get it to a trustworthy gunsmith. I'll see what tactical ordinance has to say.

Check out Wolverine Supplies, I got my Armalite A2 clamp-on from there a year ago or so.

If I hadn't modified mine to fit my USC45 carbine, I would offer to sell it (as I have the Vltor on it now), but it couldn't be used for an AR15 anymore.

JP Enterprises also makes an adjustable A2 style clamp-on, although it's a little more than the Armalite one. Brownells carries them and should be able to get one through them.

Tactical Ordnance is probably your best bet, and considering the cost of an A2 sight base versus the various clamp-on ones, It's probably not much more to ship it insured and back and get the work done.

Casey does great work, and as I said before; is an industry sponsor here, and is very much trustworthy for the work!

Contact Chris at Ace Tactical, he has the Armalite A2 clamp ons in stock right now.
