Well boys with all the talk, C-71 junk and Trudeau helping me make this decision, I decided to jump on the wagon and get an AR.
I picked up a S&W M&P15 - 2. I figured I slept with an AR long enough in the army it's time to get one.

So I'm very comfortable with the platform and clearly want to do some upgrades but don't want to break the bank. The closet outdoor range only is good for 50 yards so there won't be any long distance shooting

Im thinking of a Vortex crossfire red dot optic and update the stock and grip to magpul. The forestock comes with magpul already. Need a Sp sling adapter, stubby for grip, etc
Any suggestions on red dot or anything else? Anyone have anything for sale that I need let me know.
junk photo from website copy of the rifle I bought.

You are on the right track. You can’t go wrong with a vortex. I loved my vortex sparc 2 but my buddies sparc Ar was even nicer and more compact. Just don’t get a bushnell trs-25. I have two and they aren’t anything special.

Im glad you mentioned the Bushnell TRS. That was one of the ones I was considering. But for the extra 50 bucks I can get the Vortex.

I have 4 Bushnell trs-25's and never a problem with any of them. had a vortex spark crap out first day, sold the replacement. have a holosun as well with no problems with it.
everybody will have a different opinion.

Do you have the AR series? I looked at all the YouTube reviews and nobody really had anything bad to say about them.

didn't buy knock offs. I have three black one's that are ar series with riser's and a camo version. the black one's are all on ar's and the camo on my 935 turkey thumper.
have a friend that bought a knock off and didn't last a few range trips.

Holosun 510c or 503c are great. Can change to dot style or holosight ring and dot. Plus they have 50,000 battery hour. If you just want red dot, 403c will save you 15%. 510 is all the options (more tactical/bush) and 503 is basic but much lighter (competition)

Vortex is good too but holosun is better and better bang for buck.

I own holosun 403 and vortex strikefire 2. Both are solid.

I also suggest the SPARC-AR... 80% of an Aimpoint for 20% of the price. Don't washout in bright sunlight, lifetime no BS warranty if you need it, one easy to find AAA battery.

I encourage everyone to consider Raptor charging handles... Makes it was more user friendly IMHO.

Never had an issue with a couple of Bushnell red dots. I have owned a few vortex sparcs and a sparc 2. They feel and mount like better quality but I found 2 out of 3 were finicky with the battery contacts. If you don't mind tweaking the contact points, if need be, then I would recommend the sparc series.
I haven't used a holosun but the reviews are all over the map.
Personally I don't enjoy the battery operated optics and I believe if you can live without it there are decent options in the 1-4 or 1-6 range for around the same price.
