I plan on removing my factory handguard and putting on a Surefire Picatinny rail system and a Surefire vertival forgrip tac light / LED.

How do I remove the factory handguard?
I noticed that the "ring" under spring tension on the rear of the handguard moves when I apply pressure...do I need to move that in order to remove the two-piece handguard?

Any tips/help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

yes push the ring all the way down and then grow a third hand and pull the two halves of the handguard out

seriously, get a handguard removal tool if they are tight (CALL ME A WUSS) or get a buddy to help you..... you push the ring down using both hands and he removes the handguard halves.

I find it works best with the reciever on the floor, push the delta ring towards the reciever with both hands. At some point the two halves of the handguards will clear the ring and they can be removed.
A third hand is good, but don't try to pry the delta ring down with a screwdriver or...SLIP...SCRATCH....####!

It gets easier with practice.

Heh, heh,...been there, done that.
I believe it's a sign the the 'significant other' is a keeper, when she provides that vital 'third hand'...:D

The best $ 10 USD I ever spent is a handguard removal tool (mine's made by DPMS). They can be had at Brownell's. I did try to make my own tool once, but that was a disaster. So I broke down and bought a www.dpmsinc.com tool.

Cheers,
