I'm looking to get a new AR and I think that the 16'' system is superior to the 14.5'' M-4.
Personally I think that the midlength 16'' ARs look better than 16'' with the short gas system.
What are the advantages of each ?
Who sells midlength ARs other than armalite ?
Would a 1:7 barrel be superior to a 1:9 barrel...
As you can see I have alot of points to clarify before I put down the cash :D
Thanks

Cancer :

Yes most mfg'rs do make the 16" long barrel, but almost all of them seem to have the CAR (short little guy) gas tube which results in a rapid and violent (compared to the original design of the 20" barrel and gas tube) return stroke.

KevinB will agree with me on this one, that the mid-length gas tube has the right compromise of short barrel and smoother (less likely to jam) bolt carrier/bolt assembly cycle.

I bought my midlength barrel from Wolverine.. Armalite Mfg'ed, 9" twist, and chrome lined.. wooohooo. Bought some OD coloured handguards from them too. I've been super pleased with the midlength system especially for 500m competition.

See what works for you... and your budget.

Like Hungry said, mid-length's are smoother for cycling than a short system, if your going for a short system might as well get 11.5" or 14.5".

I am in the process of building a 16" mid-length myself, I had a CMMG barrel on order in for >8 months and had to give up on it, I bought an Armalite (Wolverine), your other option is RRA (Questar). Not every mfg makes mid-length systems although more are getting into it.

Armalite is only in 1/9 twist, I don't know about the RRA.

I got a 16" 1/9" mid-length from Wolverine and it works great. It feels gentler than the carbine length systems I've tried.

Don't get me wrong about the 14.5" and shorter carbine barreled boomsticks with the carbine length gas tube.

I had a 14.5" rig that I just sold. I loved every minute I owned it. It's just that I'm used to competing with a 20" Hbar system over the past 20 years now. Then when I switched to a carbine, I could not get over how fast and violent the bolt carrier (AR15 carrier vs. M16 carrier argument here) was with the shorter gas cycle/system/expansion rate. And that's when I learned about how others slow down said return action by employing an M16 bolt carrier.

"AHA ! I see," said the blind man to his deaf son.... :) That's why there's all kinds of fuss over the M16 bolt carrier over at ARF site. I was told (you guessed it, sportsfans) that if I did not use an M16 bolt carrier in my 14.5" carbine, :) My #### would fall off. ;)

The M14 guys know all about said rumours, old wives' tales, and common misunderstandings.

If you black/green rifle lovers don't get the "WHAT ? Yer ####'s gonna fall off!!" joke, then you gotta watch my M14 Clinic videos or come to my M14 clinics.... LOL

Cheers,
bARney

I can foresee only ONE regret with the Midlength gas tube and that is all the accessories (read: rails and more gadgets) like railed handguards, free float thingamajiggies, are all made for the carbine length gas tube (read: 6" long).

Brownells does have some rail handguards for the midlength gas tubed rifles, but now a whole selection.

Then again we Service Rifle types (read: ONE way range) don't need rails unless I gotta bolt a QR bottle for my Ibuprofen after the 500m to 100m rundowns. ;)

I'd got with the Armalite.

If you want to shoot it in Service Rifle and use 75 or 77gr ammo
If available I'd get the CMMG 1:7 barrel - or talk to Questar and get a Douglas or Noveske barrel made and imported.

I've been very happy with my Noveske and Douglas barrels

He is my CMMG midlength. It is on a Colt M4 flat top, 12in Troy rail, MI lowprofile gas block and Troy flip up sights.
I have yet to have any problems with the gun.
YMMV,
Hoddie.
